Moose draw thoughts.

Hey everyone. Just wanted to see where everyone is at with their moose draws. I gained some points in Wyoming while I was a resident, and now that I’m not a resident it’s tough for me to justify buying a 150$ point when I’m not realistically going to draw for another 18+ years. My thoughts are to start saving that money and put towards a moose hunt in Canada or something.

Has anyone else given up on the draw too??

For all the money and effort it takes to maybe draw a tag, just go to Alaska or Canada. That’s what I’m doing for moose, at least.

I have drawn four Shiras tags over the years. I applied in Colorado for the first time last year due to changes in the upfront costs and then dropped out this year due to new changes in the cost of points and the slim chance of ever drawing that tag. I am not going to start again in Wyoming after my waiting period is over.

My nine year old says she would like to go moose hunting so I am saving now for a trip to Canada.

This is my first year applying and I'm patiently waiting for June. I have thought about a moose hunt in Canada, the only downside is I believe you have to have a guide if you are not a citizen which ups the cost, and I prefer DIY.

GregB- that is why people go to Alaska. You can DIY as a resident of the lower 48.

In Canada, even if you are a citizen, you require a guide to hunt big game out of your own province or territory. There are some exceptions in certain places with a resident hunter friend hosting you.

Maine is also a tough draw! At least it's cheap. You can purchase up to 6 chances a year as a NR. I'm fairly sure you need a guide. I enter every year with low expectations. You gotta be in it, to win it....

I’m not aware of a law requiring a guide but I haven’t lived in Maine for a few years now. If you get picked for Maine I could help you out. Spent a lot of time in the County.

Maine has become a joke. NR odds for a bull tags for any unit worth hunting are terrible. They further devalued it buy allowing the purchase of extra chances.
I have about 15 plus years in points in Maine and havent drawn. I have been on two tags as an alternative for my buddy in units 7 and 8 we killed great bulls.

The best odds I had in NH were 1 in 32, about 8 years ago. Since then with tag allocations being cut my odds are up to 1 in about 400...havent drawn and most likey never will.

That said have bowhunted moose in Canada three times and am going again this year...I dont ever plan on drawing a New England or lower 48 moose tag, even though i apply for all of them.. If it happens I will be shocked

I wouldnt start on the ground floor for any lower 48 moose tag except maybe Idaho....and only if I was using the licence for another hunt that year.

True, it would just be easier to drive up to Canada. We'll see if I draw an Idaho tag this year.

I'll have 22 moose points for UT, now that I didn't draw again for this fall. Even at 22 points, I'm a ways from pulling a tag. I'm too far into it now to give up, but if just starting out, no way I would bother.

If I wasn't a CO resident I absolutely wouldn't bother getting into the points game as a non-resident. By the time the $1000-2000 in points fees rack up in addition to the cost of the out of state tag you could be in Alaska hunting I would think. As a CO resident other than the wait its still competitive in price to hunt moose here eventually even with $500-1000 in point fees. But there is something to be said for the time factor too, I'm not on the back end in years yet so I'm okay playing the waiting game for now. If I had less life commitments that would allow me to hit up AK or other traveling hunts routinely I would direct my resources towards those in a heart beat.

I have ten moose points in Wyoming and dont see a light at the end of this long long tunnel. But on the bright side we are headed to Newfoundland in October.

I have been fortunate to hunt and kill moose in Maine, New Hampshire, Wyoming, Montana and Alaska. I remember wondering if I would ever draw a moose tag in the continental US but just stayed at it. If you can afford to apply where there are random tags you always have a chance. I’m a fan of keeping that dream alive by applying and also hunt where you can without needing to draw. Heck, I drew a Colorado rifle sheep tag this year. You just never know when good luck will happen.

Good luck to all planning their moose hunts.

Congratulations on completing the USA moose grand slam! That is awesome.

I have also hunted Maine and New Hampshire, but I let my dad, as my sub-permittee, shoot the New Hampshire bull.

I might make it to Alaska one of these days.
