Montana non resident application question

Quick question for you all that have done the non resident application. Since I have moved away for school and I do not have family in the state I need to apply for the non resident tag. The paper instruction book is obviously useless. Do I have to apply for the combo tag online and pay for it and then log back in to apply for limited entry units after I do that? I cannot find anywhere to put in for units currently and the silly paper application won't let me use a personal check.

Maybe I am doing something wrong then because after I select the Big Game combo license and check the box that I wish to have the elk portion refunded if I do not draw it then just takes me to a screen to purchase that combo license and I have not been able to find where to put in unit codes for the permit.

Yeah you should have to buy your licences first and then put in for your limited entry. Kinda weird though cause like Jason said you should be able to do it all in one transaction.

Have you gone all the way through and purchased your license? I just played with it a bit and it took me directly through the license purchase regardless of which option I chose. I didn't go any further because I don't want to buy a license there this year.

If you're planning on hunting there, why don't you just buy the license and then apply for your permits? I can't remember the exact chronology of steps last year, but I know for a fact I didn't log back in and apply for my deer permit.

I have not gone all the way through and purchased the license because I wasn't sure if there was a way to enter permit numbers. I will go that route now.

I purchased the application for the Big Game combo and then had to log back in to apply for my deer and elk permit areas and bonus points. What an odd way of doing things.

You should be able to take care of the whole process in one transaction if you are entering everything correctly, which can be tricky. I just purchased my combo tag and applied for LE permit all within the same transaction. This is my fourth year hunting as a non resident and have always completed the transaction the same way. I have had good luck calling the info line with questions in the past.

If I am not mistaken, I don't think you can apply for permits until sometime in March. This may explain part of your issue. I looked at it for 20min last week and it is not exactly straight forward.

Yes you can. Application deadline is March 15th. You can buy a leftover license after that BUT you cannot apply for permits after that deadline.
