Montana crazies, do they have grizzlies?

Sounds like a biologist confirmed they are in there at times. I would reach out to them and explain the specific area you plan to hunt to ease your mind and set your level of protection. Best of luck

A couple made it a little north of sheep Mtn last year or year prior and then disappeared. Always surprised they aren’t more established considering the proximity to established populations.

Yep. Video of at least one but there have been unconfirmed sightings for several years. I haven't seen one, or tracks. With the number of hunters in there last year for archery elk if there were a lot of grizz there would have been numerous reports.

At this point it is safe to assume there are grizzlies in every mountain range in Montana. Densities may vary greatly but the days of assuming you have zero percent chance of encountering a grizzly in certain ranges are behind us.

You have a better chance of getting hit by lightning after winning the lottery than seeing a grizzly in the Crazies. Biologists love to tell everyone there’s a “chance” of seeing them everywhere.

Similar story in Wyoming. One confirmed in the Bighorns in 2024.

I would definitely say that they’re in their occasionally, but I don’t think I would be nearly as concerned about them as if you were to say hunt in the Bob Marshall, where your chance of running into them are pretty high. Are you doing horseback or just hiking in?

There is a young grizzly bear that has been living in the Shields River valley north of Livingston and at the base of the Crazies. Been there a year or two and surprisingly hasn't gotten in trouble yet.

Ain't no doubt about griz in the Crazies. The tatted up gal bartender at the Bank Bar in Wilsall told me so!
And she said she loves you and only you I bet! 🤣 she is scarier than anything in the Crazy Mountains. Yes take a sidearm just because. You will not see a grizzly in there.

I can’t imagine they’re not in there. Whether that’s their primary range is another story. They’re as far east as red lodge now, if not further.

Will you see one probably not but they are there. Some of the tracks I've seen and marks on the trees are from claws too big to be a black bear.
