For those interested. The current estimate of this herd is 50-60.

Per the legislation: “The DNR may manage the Kittson Central elk herd population to allow for genetic diversification and herd health. The herd may not be allowed to exceed 130% of the estimated 2023 population.”

Have you ever been up in that area? I’m in MN and have considered applying, but that corner of the state is new territory for me.

I have been a few times but not specifically in any of the elk units. It's flat country with a lot of big ag fields. Areas that aren't farmable are typically brushy wet meadows and tree cover is mostly Aspen and smaller bur oaks.

Edit to add, if you're considering it, start applying now. Draw odds are low and currently it's once in a lifetime hunt.

Got it, thanks. Can you just opt for points? Similar to the bear lottery?

It's not a point system to my understanding but if you've been applying for at least 10 consecutive years you supposedly have better odds to draw. Otherwise I think it's just random.
