Mass/weight gainer powder for backcountry meal?

Getting ready for my elk/mule deer trip to Montana this week and I’m considering using portioned out mass or weight gainer protein powder as my breakfast meal.

In the past, I would pack two freeze dried meals a day along with various snacks, and then a tortilla and cured meat for lunch.

I’m considering replacing one of the freeze dried meals (breakfast) with weight gain powder.

On paper it seems like a good idea. Relatively light weight, calorically dense, etc. Also, I have taking valuable time in the morning to boil water and down a full mountain house meal. A shaker bottle and “drinking” breakfast seems much more efficient.

Any thoughts? My only concerns are A) making sure I can effectively clean/rinse out my shaker bottle in cold water so it doesn’t get funky B) that the meal will sustain me instead of just giving me a quick sugar rush and C) A liquid meal won’t give me liquid poo. 😂

Anyone else try this? Thoughts?

I do this. It works out great.

Sometimes I partially boil the water. The warmth is great on those cold mornings.

I've done it adding an instant coffee packet or two and some quick oats.

I used to love the chocolate flavored beef protein in the red jug. Forgot the brand...

You can mix it in a ziplock and leave the shaker cup.

Fuckin A’ good idea! I don’t want to have to deal with another container/cleaning, etc.

I migrated to caffeine and electrolyte pills now. A zip-lock with some of each, it's dirt cheap and easy that way.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea.

I’d bet something like a visine bottle (rinsed out very, very thoughtfully) labled full of dish soap like powerwash would go a very long way towards keeping your cup from getting funky when you are using literally one or two drops of it per day to shake inside your cup after breakfast to “sanitize”.

Adds ~1 ounce in weight. An item that you could probably find multiple uses for. Just label it really good because it would suck to squirt dish soap in your eye.

Great way to get protein but make sure you have enough carbs. The body needs more carbs on demanding days. A teaspoon of Psyllium husk will help keep the gut working regularly. When backpack hunting, I like a protein shake along with cold soaked oatmeal.

I made my own breakfast shake blend this year, and it worked out great! Like someone else mentioned, on the really cold mornings I use warm water for it. It’s made up of oats, protein powder, flax seeds, chia seeds, peanut butter powder, cocoa powder, and instant coffee.

First, blend the oats, flax seeds, and chia seeds together in a blender on high to turn it all into a powdered mixture. Then add in the rest of the powders and mix together on medium to homogenize.
