Marlin 39A Mountie/carbine question

Hey guys. I have an opportunity to pick up a Marlin 39A with 20” barrel. After checking it was manufactured in 1961/1962 timeframe. The current owner claims it is unfired. After inspecting it I can’t find any reason to disagree with him. It looks exactly like it should have when it came from Marlin. I’m hoping to get a realistic value for it. The owner said make him an offer on it. I don’t want to low ball the offer and completely push him away or offer him more than it’s realistically worth. I’ve owned a couple in the past, but not in this condition. I have checked on Gunbroker, but don’t accept their numbers as the last word. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I suggest checking completed auctions on GunBroker. To me, what actually sold — and not the asking price — is the final word.

Good luck snagging the lever gun. The Marlin 39As are perhaps the finest .22 rifle ever made. If you buy it, SBR it, chop the barrel to 12 inches, and add a can. (Just kidding, but that would be a badass .22.)

Can’t help on price, but sounds like a gem. I own several Marlin’s from the 1960’s and they’re all very well made. Jump on it.

I can’t give you an accurate guesstimate on price either and I agree with the guys above… Buy it.

I learned how to shoot with my dad’s. My favorite 22 ever made. I’d grab one in a second if I came across one for sale.

Based upon some of the feedback I’m getting I called the guy and told him I was a little reluctant to make an offer since I had no idea what he thought it was worth. He said he’d take $650 cash for it. How “reasonable” would you guys consider that. I sort of hate to pass on it since the thing is unfired without the original box.

There are some collectible Marlins that are super valuable and others not so much. I heard someone in the past say the Marlin Collectors forum is one of the best sources of info - I’ve never checked it out, but assume it’s still active.

Tell him I will give him $800 for it. 😀

I ended up buying the 39A and it is literally perfect condition. I don’t think it’s ever had a round put in it. Not a mark anywhere. It will be a great one to eventually leave to my grandson.

Actually after I talked to the guy and agreed on when/where to meet up he said since I had to drive 25 miles to pick it up he buy my gas and reduced it to $625. I went ahead a paid him the $650 and am beside myself. After running the serial number it was made in 1960 and looks like it just shipped this week from Marlin. The gold trigger and gold inlay in the barrel where the 39A Mountie is show zero wear. It’s the cleanest example of an older 39A I’ve ever seen.

Sweet! Mine is not near that nice. Had a broken buttstock replaced with a checkered one, and a missing sight hood. But it's still a fun shooter....

Awesome!! Yes they are sweet little rifles. I have a really early 39A rifle and carbine that are in similar condition. I e always thought the Marlin levers were special. Thanks for the photos.

I have a 39a Mountie and definitely think $650 is a steal. Nice snag. I’d have even bought a second one at that price.

Love seeing photos of these classic rifles and hearing how much folks treasure them. Thanks.
