Magnacut…worth it?

I’m considering a small to medium fixed blade in Magnacut. Premium price on the steel, it seems. For those of you who have blades made of it, is it with the extra money? My uses will be general utility, fire starts, regular carry, and meat processing. I’m particularly interested in corrosion resistance.

I’ve had a kershaw leek in magnacut for about a year. I touch up the edge about once a month with sporadic usage. I should have cut up a deer with it this year but didn’t think about it. It was also cerakoted from the factory. 0 signs of any corrosion. I would pay the extra $30 for any of the upgraded steel models even though I really like the sandvik steel for how sharp I can make it, in a hurry. I can’t say I have seen a difference over other cpm steels I have used.

I'm a bit spoiled as I work with the guys and don't have to actually buy their knives but for the past few years I only use UG-Tools knives with Magnacut blades, TiNy model being my favorite. Thing is amazingly light - 80ish grams for a fixed knife and has a Magnacut blade hardened to 65RC.

Sharpened to a slight convex with 600 grit diamond stone plus few passes on a strop it gets razor sharp and I can do 2-3 medium sized wild pigs (70-80kg) before it gets dull. Pelvis and ribcage included. Batoned it trough red stag pelvis (arround 180kg) with no edge damage. Good stuff, I'm a fan.

I have 2 blades in magnacut and like them very much. My edc is a hogue and I abuse it. No chips or rolls compare to other steels I’ve used. Easy to resharpen and generally good for a few months before I notice it. I am hard on them as I cut a wrap on a round bale once a week. IMO worth the $. Nonissue for corrosion.

The difference in steel is way outside my ability to process, but I do have a couple blades in MC, and all I know is they seem to stay sharp a long while and never rust. That’s all I need. I’m a spaz at sharpening so I need one that stays sharp until I can send it in.

For what my little knowledge is worth, I think it’s a great material for a knife.

I’ve been carrying a knife with MC every day for the past year and I believe it holds an edge better than anything I have ever used. I’m definitely a fan.

Don't pry anything with it or it will snap. It holds and edge and will stay sharp but it's brittle steel. Its has its strengths and its weaknesses for sure.

For $17.09 shipped, I figured why not give it a try

Magnacut is a great steel, especially when run harder around 63RC. It still takes an edge pretty easily and was designed specifically for knives.

It depends on what you are looking for. If you are wanting super edge retention, MagnaCut isn’t really the top of the line. What it does is to get really good edge retention while maintaining really good toughness, and it does it with a lot of corrosion resistance. If you want to maximize any of those three factors, there are better options. But there isn’t much that does such a good job with all three together. Mine does not hold an edge as long as K390 or M398, but it’s more corrosion resistant and chips less.
