Made in China versus USA

American made pack components are definitely top quality, but it doesn't make sense for every hunter to pay top dollar for one. No one beats Kifaru's quality. They are also the most expensive pack I've found.

One post said if it costs $20 extra then so be it. I agree but in reality it's more like $120 extra. Sometimes $500 extra. If a guy only hunts 5 days every other year, there's no need to spend $800 on a bomb proof pack.

If a guy on a budget spends top dollar on a pack he'll need to cut back in other areas. Maybe he doesn't go out to eat. That will effect American jobs. Maybe he can't tip the American waiter. Maybe he gets his wife to cut his hair and now the barbershop is struggling.

This is very complex and I'm a big fan of choices. Sometimes I want the best regardless of cost. Other times, it benefits me to be cheap.

I guess a guy just has to have his priorities. A friend of mine drinks alot of beer. I mean a lot. He will never have anything more than his Redhead pack from Target or Dicks or Big 5 or wherever he got it. Says he can't afford a new pack. If he cut his alcohol habit in half for 2 months, he could afford it. ;)

Cheap stuff from China ain’t so cheap as we are now finding out. This China Virus is going to cost the American taxpayers Trillion$. We need to tariff the crap out of everything coming out of China to make American products competitive.

Is California still considered part of the USA? Just curious... lol
Yes, but it appears that Kuiu packs are assembled in Asia, not the USA.
Apparently their carbon fiber frames come from West Sacrcomento, but may not be Berry Compliant.
At least their website (Rocket Composite) says "Keeping as many processes as possible “in house,” our quick response time is a key factor to our success "

So true. Also a pack should last a lifetime. I have a backpack I bought in the 1980s that I used this year on a Sitka Blacktail Deer hunt and my moose pack is from the 1990s...both "Made in USA" tags still on these packs.

I think you need to look at everyone's prices again. This gets repeated over and over but it simply is not true.

Kifaru lite frame $350. Reckoning is $284 Total is $634

Exo Mountain Gear K3 Frame is $375. 4800 bag is $274. Total is $649

Seek Outside 5400 Lanner bag kit with frame extensions and lumbar pad is $606

Stone Glacier X Curve frame is $365. 5900 Sky bag with lid is $294 Total is $659

This is as close as a comparison I could make for bag size. I understand you reasoning about upper end packs might not be top priority. But, Kifaru is no where near the most expensive. It is only more expensive then SO.
You left out the $200 in pouches and pockets from Kifaru, no one buys a plain bag and frame. That's where theirs adds up quick.

And how have Americans benefited? And I'm not trying to be disrespectful. What has Canada given the United States in return for our goodwill? I won't even ask what Mexico has given other than cheap labor to the auto industry and disrespect for our borders, not to mention they've become world leaders in drug trafficking and murder of their own people while their government turns a blind eye and criticizes the US every chance they get, but that's a different discussion. Trade wise, what is Canada doing for us? We certainly don't need help building autos. And don't say Canadian whiskey either. Even the Irish got ya beat on that ;)

Simple, We give you our oil for next to nothing so you can turn around and sell it for a healthy profit. Our Prime Minister is a damn joke.

I saw someone mention the zipper pulls had to be sourced out of the USA. Are they referring to small piece of cordage attached to the zipper on my kifaru? It's like a piece of 550 cord but it looks a little beefier.

Obviously made in house at Kifaru.

That's ok, y'all are gouging us on the maple syrup. Over $10 a pound?

I swear it ain't any cheaper up here, that's actually a good deal, I've been using aunt jemimas my whole life except on special occasions lol...used to watch cartoons and wonder how everyone south of the border can afford maple syrup on their pancakes every day until I realized there's a large population down there that refers to aunt jemimas and mrs buttersworth as "maple syrup"...SHAME! 😬

Lot of them are designed into the bag to begin with. A lot of guys don't like a lot of pouches etc etc. I'm just trying to figure out why everyone gets so worked up over what backpack someone chooses to run.
