I like the Hardcore History podcasts. Super in depth. Not all subjects are appropriate for listening with little kids. As mentioned earlier “Ridgeline” by Michael Punke was a good listen.

Ridgeline by Michael Punke

I read this last year and really enjoyed it. It’s definitely very frustrating read for obvious reasons.

In the heart of the sea, the sinking of the whale ship Essex, by Nathaniel Philbrick.

This is a good one that combines a slice of American history I hadn’t learned about (the Quaker whalers of Nantucket) with a heck of a survival tale. Really well done.

Steven Kotkin does such a good job of summarizing what was going on on the other side it changed my understanding of much of WW2, before during and after.

I rest the first two, and awaiting the third, which I think comes out in July. I catch endless crap from my wife/kids for reading a thousand pages on Stalin. They are interesting though.

It's not WWII era but a bit earlier (1915); "Endurance - Shackleton's Incredible Journey" by Alfred Lansing, is a great listen on Audible. A failed artic exploration by Ernest Shackleton and crew and the incredible survival and rescue.

This - must be the best survival story ever told. (Antarctic, but same idea.)

Alone on the Ice by David Roberts.

Madhouse at the end of the earth by Julian sancton

undaunted courage by Stephen Ambrose (probably not quite the same genre but it’s close enough)

Great genre for audio books! I listen to them in many of my runs/walks and they’re awesome.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy was a great listen on a long road trip for me.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy if there are no kids or people with a weak constitution in the car.

Do you find yourself pausing and thinking a bit pretty often?

On long drives with the mysteries, crime novels or action stuff- no.

When reading/listening to heavier or philosophical....say something like Sun Tzu's, "The Art of War"- yeah, I do have to pause to consider certain passages.

When driving, I consciously try to remind myself; defensive driving...it's easy to let my mind wander.

Anything Louis L'Amour.

They are mostly westerns, but they get you hooked quick.
Sackett series will get ya close to 100 hours with all the books following a family saga across several generations of American discovery and dvelopment from the pilgrims in to the early 1900s.

As far as longer listens 12 hours or so the two best are:

Last of the Breed (Soviet Era about an Air Force Pilot)

The Walking Drum (Tons of great historical fiction that covers a number of pre-medieval cities and areas in Europe and Western Asia)

And I highly recommend it

GF listens to books, I am old school and buy books still. That said, we listened to Prince Harrys book, he narrated it as well. It was damn good I have to say. Probably why his family disowned him and sounds like screwed him over as well.

She has a detective series I'll get the name of that is pretty good
