Just got my new gun, Traditions Vortex ultralight. I have read alot of the suggestions for loads. Does anyone have any suggestions for this specific gun? I am leaning towards Thor bulletts 300g, BH 209 powder(not sure on amount yet). I will be hunting elk. Any help is appreciated. Do I really need to experiment with different bullets and powder to find the "right one"?

Each and every gun is different. Get the test kit form Thor, find the size that loads the best and order 1-2 packs in 300 AND 350 gr. I would probably start with 90gr. of powder(by volume) and build up a load from there.

My suggestions or thoughts and since I do not have a Traditions I really can not absolutely sure it will all work for you. There are some real unknowns... Will the Traditions breech plug ignite BH correctly and reliably every time? Even then you will probably have to use Magnum 209 primers to be sure. You will also need to make yourself a device to clean the flash channel in the breech plug.

If it were me... I would shoot a 120 grains of T7 with a W209 primer and would probably use a Thor of the size to fit the bore. An alternative to the Thor would be a No Excuse .503-460 lead conical it will fit with 70 - 90 grains of T7 and fiber shot card.

I am on the road right now, when I get back to Moscow - I will dig up some other information and add it...

Good advice given.
To answer your question on trying other bullets powder YES! but start with what you have first. If that doesn't shoot, just try the suggestions above. It's very rewarding and I'm often surprised at how accurate a ML can be with some tinkering. My current set up shoots less than 2" groups at 100 with peep BUT I tried at least five bullets/three powders to get to that. You could get there sooner. Either way, keep us posted. There is some great knowledge shared on this muzz forum as you'll see.

To add, you might need to shoot your muzzy a little but for it to settle in. Mine started shooting the same load a lot better after 70-75 shots.

To work up a load I would highly consider putting a scope on it. Like mentioned earlier, try different powder, bullet, AND primer combinations. Remember to write everything down so you can analyze it. I keep a binder with me when I go shoot. If you get the bh209 to work for you, you will be really happy with it when you go to clean your gun.

Another suggestion would be to invest in a MAX muzzleloader DVD. It will be well worth the money.
