LImbsaver for old rem 30-06

Tried searching but couldnt find an exact answer to my question. A family member recently gave me a basically untouched 1976 Remington 700. I would like to get a new recoil pad for it. My research tells me the airtech is the way to go, but unfortunately none of the templates appear to be an exact match to this older stock (dimensions are approx. 5" x 1 9/16"). Has anyone found a particular airtech model that fits well enough on these old stocks? Alternatively, has anyone had lucky modifying these old stocks/does it really matter if they are not perfectly flush? Thanks.

I recently installed a grind to fit pacmayr decelerator on an old Remington 788. Pretty easy to work with if you’re patient, and take your time. I used file/rasp and a palm sander with varying grit sand papers. Turned out okay even without a grinding jig. I don’t think you can grind the air tech pad.

I just bought an Airtech for my Savage 30/06. I ended up calling Sims directly for help getting the right pad. It doesn't fit perfectly but its good enough. It did reduce recoil.

I ran into the same problem with a Rem 700 bdl, none of the templates fit right, so I bought the grind to fit limb saver and ground it down until it looked good. It’s a fairly easy job if you have a tabletop sander, I used a friends. Mount the pad the gun and score a line with a knife around the stock on the back side of the limb saver and the just grind to the line.

Also just to clarify, after you score a line pull the limb saver back off the stock before you start grinding. I would hate for someone to read my post and accidentally grind on their stock.

Be aware that it's going to add an inch to the LOP and that may be too long for you. Too long with a pad will feel worse that correct with no pad.

It's more of an issue late season when you have a thick coat on.

Just something to think about. When I put on a pad, I cut the stock to maintain the correct LOP for the shooter and use a grind to fit.

It will on an older Remington with an 1/4" thick original plastic buttplate.

Thanks for replies and pointing out LOP issues - will definitely take that into consideration. As far as grind pads, is limbsaver still the way to go? Or are there any pachmayrs I should consider?
