Nice to see some hammock campers here. We are the wise minority. The best option for bivy hunts in foul weather...no need for a flat spot, camp goes up very fast, you're off the wet ground, easy to keep warm, packs up in a few minutes and you're back in the hunt.

There is a bit of a learning curve to it. Or you can do what I did and buy this book:

I used a quality Clark NX-250 Four Seasons Jungle Hammock with Velcro insulation shield.
A good UQ & TQ with a Doobie for added comfort. Total system weighs 10.6lbs. This hammock has large pockets under it for things like jackets, boots, etc and i filled em up. I own several quilts for every kinda weather. Ya just gotta dial in the right ones for the trip. BTW...snow was blowing sideways everyday for a week during this hunt, stopped for 2 whole hours one day. Crazy weather. The wind was rippin' all night...this is the side of my tarp facing the wind. The other side was hiked up so I could see out (see previous post). Not cold at all. Awoke before dawn when a flock of chatty turkeys collected under my tarp.



Dragged my toasty arse outta bed and killed this bull 90 minutes later on the last day of my Utah hunt.



Only time I got cold was during breaks. Had to keep moving cuz weather prevented glassing and tracks were gone within hours. When I stopped to video and snack I got a chill, the rest of the time I was humping hills hoping to stumble onto a shooter.

Sound advice. Anyone that’s froze or even got chilled in a hammock didn’t have good quilts. You hear about the horror stories but, they were using a pad or sleeping in a bag with no under side insulation. If you do it right, you will be snug as a bug in a rug. And sleep like a rock.

Yeah and it is worth mentioning that a big, well-designed tarp is a key component. I use an 11' Mega Ogee with storm doors for crappy conditions. Deflecting cold wind is VITAL regardless what your shelter consists off. The Mega Ogee is (in my opinion) the best tarp created by man. It is crazy versatile.

Add me to the hammock team. I don’t use a quilt but I do lay on an insulated pad in the hammock. I made my own tarp and hammock too (ripstopbytheroll ftw). Plenty warm down to 20*.

There's a good bit of variety, but I believe most of what you're seeing are mountain laurels.
