I’m planning for a late November northern Canada moose hunt where temps will be below zero and not too much above. I need a pair of gloves. I have a pair of thick wool and leather chopper mitts that I’ll bring but would also like something a bit less bulky with fingers. I don’t want KUIU or Sitka $100 gloves. I was thinking of something more along the lines of a good insulated tough leather glove that I could use while trudging through snow. Something nice and insulated but also tough to use for other “camp” chores. Maybe I’m thinking 2 different gloves here, but what would you guys recommend. I don’t know how the coldgear from UA or some of the other better known brands would do…? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've spent a lot of time in late fall and winter Canadian weather and I only use Black Diamond gloves. They are mountaineering/ski/climbing focused, but they totally do the trick for hunting as well. I like the guide gloves for complete cold/wet weather protection. I also use the specialist and enforcer gloves when I want more dexterity and need less warmth (they're my ice climbing gloves, but they work equally well on a rifle as they do on an ice axe). For glassing I have the mercury mitt, and then a variety of thinner soft shell gloves for cool weather (torque, impulse and arc).

I personally don't think any hunting specific company comes remotely close to matching the quality of mountaineering gear like Black Diamond in the glove department.

I am in the snow in the mountains ALOT. I use black diamond gloves as well and am VERY happy with them. I have had bad frost nip and REAL cold hands many times in crappy gloves . Cold hands SUCK bad ! If you go with black diamond I own several pairs and would recommend the guide or patrol gloves for cold weather. A glove such as the ARC will not due if it gets cold. Black diamond also stands behind the gear they make.

I agree with the comments above. If you want pure warmth, you can take a look at OR Meteor Mitts -around $70, sometimes around $50 on sale. Your hands will NOT get cold with these.

Thanks guys. The experience on this site always amazes me. Those blackdiamond gloves look to be the real deal. I looked at both the Guide and the Patrol as mentioned above. They both look good. I'll have to weigh my options for the extra $ for the guide over the patrol. Mitts may also be in my future depending on how the gloves perform.

I found that Marmot also makes a "no frills" work leather glove that looks pretty good.

What do you guys think of the black diamond Prodigy Glove? They look to have a lot of insulation as well.

The Cabelas Pinnacle gloves are very warm and durable for the price. I will throw out a disclaimer that mine are going on 7 years old, so not sure if they've changed them up through the years. My older pair are very warm and pretty bombproof.

Been following this thread. I have looked at the Cabela's gloves in the store but could never pull the trigger. I have an older pair of MT050 gauntlet gloves that I like and they are usually fine to keep me warm. The thing I hate is they eventually will get wet either from finally soaking through or from sweat. At that pint they take forever to dry. I like the fact that those BD gloves have the removable insulated liner which would make it much easier to dry. Keep the info coming and I would love to see pics of the liners and gloves as what I can find on the internet is fairly limited.

The army makes some extreme cold weather winter over mittens that are pretty good. I have used them for years they are green with a leather palm and you can use the wool liner gloves under them or whatever glove you want. Should be able to pick them up for $20. I also have some Sitka gear pantanal gloves that I like alot but those are $100.

I just bought a set of Black Diamond Guide Gloves. Man, these are some gloves. Built like a tank. Hopefully they keep the digits warm this winter. They are expensive, but I found a new pair on Ebay for about $60.00 below what stores were charging for them.

After reading this thread I picked up a pair of the BD Guide Gloves. I like them but I think I may need to go with XL. So, I figured I would throw it out there in case someone was interested in them. Shoot me a PM and we can discuss.

Anyone used the black diamond prodigy gloves? They have almost the same amount of insulation as the Guide gloves but look to have a little more dexterity and may work better for bow hunting.
