Think I may have finally gotten onto a good "glove" system

They’re very warm, especially considering the weight, they also compress pretty small.

They are not overly durable—just a light ripstop, so would probably survive a ski out, but nothing you want to consistently ski with.
Perfect. I'm thinking for having something warm for the person who is hurt or huddled up for the night so they sound like exactly what I'm looking for.

I use Outdoor Research outer mittens like these.

I usually don’t wear or pack the liners that come with them. I’ll wear either lightweight wool gloves like Smartwool or the heavier military version.

If it’s really cold, I’ll use synthetic mittens underneath like the Enlightened Equipment mentioned above.

^ I've got an old pair (20+ years) of a similar OR mitt—Gore shell, reinforced palm—came with a medium weight inner fleece mitt. I still use them on winter trips and still going strong :)

Any alternative to the lightweight gloves you mentioned in your original post? It appears that the BD ones are only now available with an attached over mitt. I like you idea of the EE used in that capacity.

I've got a few pairs of Montbell glove liners; they're a little lighter than the now discontinued BD ones, but I've had problems with the finger tips opening w/ use (it's happened w/ the BD ones too but takes a lot longer).

I see their new glove liners now have some reinforcement in the finger tips, if they hold up longer than their old ones—they're an option.
