Initial impressions of the jacket. Fit and finish are excellent. Im 5'10 180lbs athletic, and large literally could not fit any better. Sleeves are fairly slim but not too bad. My Super down fits under it but not much else will. Hood is decent, I like the one on the chugach better as the bill is firmer and it has the rear cinch for around the head that I like, which is missing on the Axis and the bill is more flexible but still a pretty decent fitting hood. The material is stretchy and soft to the touch, but feels pretty tough. The feel of the water proof paneling feels very similar to the non paneled areas, but with a bit more noise to it. Im wondering what material they used as it doesn't feel like the Yukon or Chugach.

Warmth: I wore this out in 35degree weather up here in Alaska with just a light synthetic T shirt on under it. Was outside for about an hour doing a birthday scavenger hunt. When the cold wind coming off the ocean wasn't blowing too hard I was fine, whenever the wind picked up I got chilly but not bad. Overall, for a soft shell it is about average warmth, nothing special.

Wind resistance: Wind was picking up to about 20mph and when it did, I got chilly. This was very cold wind from the Pacific here in AK (being literally right on the coast) so it may have just been the lack of warmth of the jacket against my skin since all I had was a very thin T shirt on underneath, I never really felt the wind cut through the jacket. So this gets a thumbs up.

Noise: The water proof panels are predictably more noisy than the non water proof paneling, but those areas are not the areas that will make noise drawing a bow or walking. I would not hesitate to bow hunt in this in that regard.

Water resistance: Only experienced a light drizzle, cannot give a good indication of this yet so ill update it later when I do.

Overall its a nice jacket, nothing special, but then again I have not got the chance to put it through its paces yet and really test it. This is just an initial impression for those considering it right now. It seems like a jacket that will make the guide and Peloton 240 obsolete with the improvements in noise and wind resistance. Its a nice softshell with the ability of a midlayer fleece functionality, so in that regard it provides some versatility without being too heavy. Is it worth the $$? Maybe. Im not a softshell guy, I typically stick strictly with a puffy/rain shell but im liking this for trips where im not expecting a rain storm but might get some drizzle and could skip the rain gear with it also doublng as a mid layer under a puffy or rain jacket. Im not feeling buyers remorse yet because I can see ways to maximize its versatility, but time will tell. Ill update here soon once I get to put it through an actual test.

Pros:
Fit
Quiet
Added water restistance (supposedly)
Lighter (22oz is only 6oz more than a typical fleece)
Better wind resistance than the old guide

Cons:
Like any softshell, limited warmth for the weight
Like any softshell, good at a lot, great at nothing.
Weight (still 22oz) and I am a pack out hunter typically in sheep country

If you have experience with sitka jetstream, do you feel axis is better than jetstream?

Couple of things that stand out on the axis jacket vs the jetstream for me are the way the neck/collar are. I find the collar style that jetstream and the guide jacket have, once you have a few layers on you can’t zip the collar up. At least for me. And the other thing I noticed is the hand pockets are higher up so that you can get into them with a pack on. That doesn’t really matter to me, but the fact that there isn’t two zippers under your pack belt to give discomfort is what matter to me.

Would like to add that I am really liking the collar area. I never realized how this effected comfort while sitting but this gives plenty of room for a folded hood, or just space so the zipper isn't pinching in on you. Fit and comfort are amazing with this jacket.

I’m a little worried, I was about to order an XL. I’m 6’3” 195lbs so I have 5 inches on you and not many more pounds. I’m worried that if the large is perfect on you, I may need to bump up to XXL for the length, but I don’t want to be swimming in it as I have a more slender build than a typical XXL.

How is the length of the large on you? Is it actually perfect or could you lose a little length and still be happy?

Thanks for the review!

Order both an return one. I've found it's the best way to decide which one you like better.

I just got mine last night, i am 6'2 195 lbs. Fits me perfectly. I can layer an arcterxy atom underneath if needed. I really like the collar and hood on this jacket. I am surprised at how stretchy the material is too.

No I would not want to lose any length, I’m a stickler when it comes to length and this Large is perfect, just wouldn’t like it any shorter since it doesn’t have the same taper the older designs did where the rear is longer than the front. 6’3 I might start thinking XXL, but like silverbullet said, try both, return the other. FYI keep in mind the sleeves are really slim on this, makes layering under it limited to just a puffy.

I had the XL in the guide, and just now tried on and bought the XL axis at the Pope and Young conference yesterday. This is a cold weather top layer over a puffy, or moderate weather over varying sweaters for me and L in either would be too snug. If I were strictly run and gun in the mountains, maybe I'd feel it was larger than needed, but I've rarely missed extra room. I'm 180 #, wear a 41 suit, 35 waist, normal sleeve length but a little wide and thick in shoulders and torso. Bought the Axis pants as well, 36 waist is loose but fine with a belt and I will be able to insulate with either of my zip off kuiu layers. My zip off Patgonia puffy pants could go but pretty tight, and I have zipoff overpants I would use instead, just for the modularity.

Kudu booth was 15% off everything, and you could try on everything they make. You buy it and they drop ship it to you later. I got the impression that was the standard show procedure, so you could find out when they were going to be a pat an event you want to attend and save some cash.

Just an update. This jacket is great. I have taken this snowboarding here in Alaska with 8 hours straight of sleet and heavy snow, multiple wipeouts and sweat. Stayed dry the whole time, breathed well, stayed warm and Im now a fan. I have had it on for over an hour straight in a heavy rain down pour and stayed dry. I still wouldn't wear it hiking though because I run hot and overheat wearing a long sleeve at freezing temps. No snags and I wear it very often around town because it fits and feels great. My only regret is I bought it in Verde 2.0 instead of gray since I wear it as an everyday jacket so much. Definitely spendy at $270, but so far it is delivering especially on the waterproof side of things.
