Killing illegal grizzly cheaper than legal?

I don’t know about 94 specifically, but after the big , overhyped
Yellowstone fire, the elk populations flourished because of the habitat enhancement!
Just shows that there are a lot of factors involved!
Fires were in 88. In 95 when the feds dumped the wolves in YNP, there were 20000 elk in the northern herd . Today that herd is 6000. So tell me exactly which "factor" contributed to a decline of 14000 elk. Hint it wasn't weather or habitat.

I guess I don’t understand your questions?
No context I I suppose!?
You seem to be very passionate about the subject and seem to just throw comments out!?
As far as “culling”
I have always supported hunting of bears and wolves!
The FEDS be damned!!
I hunt bears regularly!
I intend to hunt bears for the rest of my hunting years!,
I am a snob about it though!
I Do Not support bearbaiting,
Do Not support hunting with dogs
I Do Not Rifle hunt!,
Handguns only!
If you are culling predators to save ungulates populations its hard to argue that they arent or have the potential to be hard on the ungulate population. It’s simple.

Passionate not really… just highlighting the common and easily found truth.

Alaska via helo culled 99 +- bears and a few wolves to help the struggling Mulchatna caribou calving ground

94 was year of the wolf in yellowstone…

Yes,
The Mulchatna thing will go down in history as one of the stupidest things that ADF&G has done! And they are known for managing by “disaster”!
A large percentage of the biologists are against it and not just the “woke”
new generation biologists .

The Yellowstone fire should have been an eye opener for the wildlife management folks!
It was the best thing that ever happened for the wildlife!
I remember seeing the evening news reports and the reporters were almost crying about how it was going to kill all the wildlife and destroy our oldest National Park ! Bullshit!
I was down there the next year after the fire, it was burned in a mosaic.
Even the most intensely burnt areas were blooming!
Lots of great,new habitat!
That has way more affect than any predators!
You have to consider all the different causes and effects!
Fire fighting is an industry, it is about jobs!
I flew for the State of Alaska as a lead plane Pilot for air tankers .
I and my aircraft were loaned to the Feds a couple of times for down in the States.
Also had a Beaver on 44” tires for landing on sandbars, ridge tops,
anywhere I could find a place to land.
My airplane had a FLIR system onboard for mappping fire lines.
I have seen the cause and effect many times !
I referenced the wild land firefighting in order to stress the huge effect that
habitat has on wildlife populations!
The aftermath of fires is great for wildlife!
Again, wild land firefighting is all about jobs!
I of course support firefighting efforts in populated areas!
The management people come and go, they are short sighted!
One thing that stays the same is the effect that weather has on
populations!
Two winters ago here we had a very rare for this area , 2 day freezing rain!
That was on top of 3 feet of snow! And then more snow!
We had almost 100 percent moose calf mortality. And the bison herd was almost
as bad! I had bison herd come through my driveway ever few days looking for
a way to get off the road.
My neighbor had his car destroyed by a big bull running over it.
All of this rambling is to hopefully give a little insight into some issues
that people tend to get all their info from the internet!

I want to say again, I support wolf and bear hunting!
Just not the government‘s incompetent methods!

I read this 3 times and I need to take a walk and try again apparently.
Since you're trying to follow my thinking...

If we wish for some of what used to be (prey animals in historic high numbers), it seems logical that we would also want the predators back, since they were also prevalent in that era.

If we did actually see a large scale return of grizzlies and wolves, it would be beyond what people who don't want to delist them from the ESA could call "not revovered"

So it would mean state management of predators. Hunting. Them having a fear of humans...

If we're having a mental exercise on what could be, I'm going think it through.

@displacedtexan - I’m not the smartest guy, but what you are saying makes no sense. Yellowstone seems to be the most studied example, but the Frank in Idaho is another example of how predators have ravaged the ungulates. Seems as though the people who hunted them to near extinction had it figured out.

If we want to go back to the ‘historic range’ days, why stop with animals, let’s bring back Comanches, Apaches, and Sioux, oh and maybe smallpox? If we’re gonna do ‘historic’ then let’s get historic.

The people who hunted them to near extention didn't consider my ancestors human. So I don't care what they thought.

I'm not saying bring back unmanaged apex predators.

Absolutely. We are all on native land.

I am going to readily admit my selfishness!
At this point in my life I don’t give a rats ass how they do it down south.
I only care about what affects the next 20 years!!😀

Which is the reasonable amount of time that I have left in my hunting
career!
I want huge amounts of big bears crawling all over Alaska and
daring me to come after them!!
If they have to eat a lot of moose and caribou, or tourists then so be it!

Wrong
The wolves ate 14000 elk in Yellowstone. You can type 1000 more words, but still wrong.

You have your opinion!
I have mine, based on observations!!
I realize that you are probably butt hurt because you are not allowed to hunt wolves or grizzlies in most places down there? I wish that wasn’t the case!

Please refer to my post #89 for further deliberation!,

Ideally there should be limited hunting in National Parks!!
Keep the number of wolves down and give the grizzlies some
respect for humans!
