Keeping gear dry

New western hunter here heading on my first archery elk hunt in September and it seems inevitable that I’m going to get rained on at some point. I’ve seen conflicting reviews on whether a pack cover will actually keep your pack/gear dry. If you don’t use a pack cover then what recommendations does everybody have for keeping your gear dry.

Truck hunt or backpack hunt? Truck, use a pack cover. They’re not expensive. Backpack, use a pack cover they’re not expensive. If it’s gonna be a hard rain, stay in camp, or use your tarp to hole up till it’s over. Dont over think it.

I think a pack cover is a good idea to keep the outside of your pack reasonably dry, but anything in the pack that has to be kept dry needs to be in a waterproof bag. Consider what you do with your pack. Do you only go into your pack when its not raining? Of course not, so rain is going to get in your pack while its uncovered and you are putting stuff in or out. Also, with todays pack designs of one big compartment, there is no way to separate wet stuff from dry. After it stops raining and you put your wet rain jacket in with your sleeping bag and clothes, they are going to get wet too. What needs to stay dry has to have additional protection.
