It wasn’t Talley - it’s apparently me. Scope won’t stay fixed - Update: fixed. Added to first post

What are you using to degrease?
Acetone. Attempted everything per your thread on 24hr campfire forum. (Thanks for that, by the way.)

No answer yet from SWFA if 28in-lb is acceptable on the scope tube. I assume yes, but I’m not touching anything until it’s fully degreased again and I hear back.

Now I’m down the rabbit hole on additional things to add, or not. I’ve heard everything from silicon to electrical tape to…just about everything.

Screw all that noise. 25in-lbs won’t hurt and will hold of the rings are broke. Tally’s ain’t my choice not close, but shouldn’t cause slippage.

Additionally, I’ll buy the scope from you…?

Loud and clear. 25 or 28? I’ve found info from Leupold that 28 should be on the ring screws. I’m hoping that’s it.

Yep, I know lol. The Leupold backcountry rings are on now. Probably doesn’t make much difference. I tried to make Burris bases work, but nothing for a Weatherby action.

Ah, I’m holding on to this one. I’ll probably eventually move it to a different setup than the .308 but unless it’s broken I love the scope. And it was too much work to get my hands on one!

25 is what I’d use to start. But they shouldn’t be spinning at 18in-lbs.

I’m thinking your torque driver is out of spec. Did you leave it off 0 at some point?

I was thinking this as a strong possibility until I found the stuff from Leupold saying 28. Flat out loose is my suspect.

Will do.

The fact its turning so much in so few shots on a medium cartridge says to me its very loose and should be obvious.

Agreed. We’ll start over and see if torqued to *correct* spec changes it.

Are you reusing the same screws? Maybe they're stripped from torquing with wet loctite and slipping threads when the recoil hits? Just spitballing. I torque all ring screws to 18 and sent a scope back to Vortex a few years ago and they said it was damaged due to overtorquing.

That’s always their excuse. If 18in-lbs damages a scope tube, that’s a junk scope.

Nope. Talley rings were new, new hardware. Leupold new, new hardware. They’ve now been tightened once to 21 in-lb. I think they should be fine to clean up and to go to 25 now.

Here’s the best place for this follow up on bases other than Talley.

What are my best options for a Weatherby 6 lug? Due to two piece base availability, the only ones I know of are Talley, Leupold, and Warne PA. Almost ordered the Warne’s, but at $59 they seem like a lower grade option?

Ok, spent the night disassembling and recleaning/degreasing everything. Every mm of all of the hardware. Reinstalled dry and took it to the shop (not gunsmith. Yet.)

I at least had them look at it, no problems noted other than balking at my 25in-lb torque. They took their torque driver set to 25 (of note - same wheeler driver as mine) and no change/movement. So I think my driver is okay?

I’ll loctite the cap screws and try it again.

The only reason I mentioned a “different scope” is the time consideration. Hunt is coming up, and I need time to get a bore sight and zero if there’s an issue that turns up so it would be a temp fix and I can move this scope later.

Since Leupold with CDS is apparently out of favor here, what’s the consensus on a lightweight setup in 3-9’ish for a 308? 400 yards max on critters, I just rifle hunt like it’s archery season except I can shoot before I get there. 😀

For lightweight and max 400 yds, while still Leupold, the 2.5 - 8 x 36 is a great scope, IMO.

I have used Talley for years w/o problem. Scope rings to 30 lbs
Base mounts 40 - 45 lbs.

It isn’t the scope.

Are you using a lead sled?
