I was listening to a Jay Scott pod cast today. Someone suggested that the Kuiu Yukon pant with a marino under layer is all that needed for most extreem hunts. What are the pros and cons of using only the Yukon pant. I'm trying to decided is this the way to go for my 2020 Sheep Hunt.

You're going to sweat a lot if you're wearing rain pants all the time. I just wear attack pants on all of my mountain hunts then pull my chugach rain pants over those when it starts raining or I have to go through a lot of wet brush. If the temps drop enough I'll put on a pair of Peloton 200 zip off bottoms under my attack pants. I also use the rain gear as a wind block outer layer when encountering a lot of cold wind on the mountain.

This is the way I'm setting up to go. Attack and Chugach.

I guess I'm the opposite of everyone on there. I've been on two dall hunts, and if I were to go again I would seriously consider just taking the Yukon pant. I think a lot of it is going to depend on how often you're going to be wearing the rain pants. On my last hunt we were in our rain gear every day, and after the first day I got rid of my regular pants and just went with the rain pants the remainder of the hunt. In the early mornings I'd wear merino bottoms under them, but once I started moving I stripped them off. I was wearing the Chugach pants and was able to zip the side zip down from the top if it wasn't pouring rain and I started to heat up, that helped a lot. I got way too hot trying to hike with the rain pants and regular pants underneath.

I have another friend who's been on a ton of sheep hunts, and after getting home last year had this discussion with him and found he only takes rain pants on his hunts. It's probably all personal preference. Depending on what it's going to take to get to your base came, take both and you'll just see what you end up liking for yourself.

I wear just the Yukon pants and my briefs for 99% of my hunting in SC AK from upland game to caribou, bears, and even late season goats. It is a rare day that isn't wet from rain, sleet, snow or dew from August-November, and the durability of the pants really stands up well to the alder brush and scree. When it does get hot I just zip it down from the hip and i'm good to go.

On a backpack hunt I wear attack type pant and pack Chugach set. Horseback hunt the Yukon pants will hold up better. Also good to look at the weather report before leaving for airport. Pack differently for chance of rain and 10 days of constant rain. Or like previously said take both and leave 1 in base camp
