Is the 300 WSM Dying?

Agreed! I have notifications setup various places for Norma and ADG brass. I am thinking 200 pieces should cover me. Thoughts?
Imo, 500 minimum. (I bought 300 brass for a rifle i have 300-400 factory loads for a feel a little short but will use the 1x fired until they stop working, brass only for proven loads)

If you shoot mild loads the brass should be good for at least 10x each. That’s only 5,000 shots.

I hunted with a guy who had .30 wsm and it worked well for him.

I saw 300 wsm ammo sitting all by its loansome for months and months at multiple stores after everything else dried up.
I even recommend that on here a few times based on all them ammo I was seeing.

They make everything in runs. Starting w 5.56 and 9mm you just have to wait for your run.

And buy alot when It runs because it may not again for a year or 2.

Ask 338 wm owners when the last time they saw ammo was.
And 338 wm is clearly not dead.

I'm leaning towards the 178 ELDM to keep velocity up.
I’ve thought about going that route as well or the 208gr. It’s interesting with the 178 the Eld-x actually has a higher bc than the -M??? Minimal but I haven’t seen that in other weights.

I'd double check using applied ballistics.
They are known for some of if not the best testing.
There numbers were so far off from what hornady published for the 147 I emailed applied and told them they had an error.

He assured me the error was with hornady.
And my shooting shows the applied numbers were accurate.

That’s good to know!

I got enough brass to last a lifetime.

Is it dying? Lol for the life of me I can’t possibly see why. They are IMHO one of the best long range calibers there is.

What kind of barrel life would I expect with a 180 at 3000fps?

Agreed! It’s just not well supported these days it seems.

Depends, there’s a lot of variables, powder type, efficiency of combustion, pressure, barrel length, barrel materials…. That seems like a relatively modest load and the life shouldn’t be a concern. Unless your one of these guys who pounds 7500rounds annually. Then it might make it 18months.

Have you had the opportunity to use either on game?
No. I have no doubt it would be very lethal.

I bought this rifle used, did some load development, had the sticky stock so sent it off to get new furniture. For the 10 months it was gone, I bought into the less cartridge/recoil for hunting.

It’s been sitting in my safe unfired since its return. I should probably take it to smith to cut barrel down to 20” and threaded for suppressor.

I’m in four figures, but I wouldn’t be racking that volume up on this gun.

The 300 WSM really hits the velocity sweet spot for the 208 gr ELD-M. I have gotten outstanding performance on game with that bullet.
