The good news is that I think any pictures of your honey holes are safe! I think Apple proposed some sort of ability to scan iCloud pictures to find and report CSAM, but I think that was abandoned.

I don’t think that effort was abandoned. And it’s not “scanning” in the sense you imagine.

Nerd: every image, file, etc has a unique hash that can be calculated using specific algorithms. In this case it’s MD5. A few non profits as well as governments and corporations have a records of hashes that resolve to csam. What apple does is cross reference the hashes associated with the images on your phone to the list of csam hashes.

“Does” as in currently still doing? I had heard it was shelved, but maybe that has changed.

Note - I’m against CSAM and think pedos should be shot. But I don’t think the solution is what Apple proposed.

I was expecting the function to be automatic, or at least intuitive, when there was no cell service available. It is not.

Travel out of cell phone range
Open text on iPhone like always to text a contact
iPhone will give you a pop up stating no cell service would you like to satellite text?
Click on pop up and you will be prompted to connect to satellite
- iPhone will give you a right / left arrow to point phone to satellite
Green dot appears once connected to satellite
Text as usual
Remain connected to satellite (adjust with arrows to keep green dot) if want to receive reply

Try to go to the messages app and scroll to the bottom and click “try satellite messaging demo”??

Seems like you'll need scheduled check in times. You'll need to be in "satellite" mode to receive messages when out of range. While both parties are connected texting seems almost normal according to reports.

I’d make sure he is listed as an emergency contact to start with and then test it out.

I don't know. I think emergency SOS are only for local first responders? I don't think you can text emergency contacts in ios17...

I may be wrong but I thought there was something about the people you have setup in your contacts as emergency contacts can text you with out you initiating a text.

Used the sat messaging a few days while out goat hunting out of service up here in BC, worked flawlessly! I left it in sat mode in my pocket and would receive messages from anyone I messaged via satellite. When I went to send a message, I’d have to point at the satellite, but sending was quick once pointed the right way.

The guys who say they are still going to carry zoleo/in-reach must be some of the same guys who said they were going to keep carrying a stand alone GPS device.

Raises hand; there are definitely enough unknowns that depending solely on your cell phone for travel in remote wilderness areas is not going to happen for me just as it's being released.

At a minimum cell phones aren't nearly as weatherproof, sturdy, nor have as robust antenna or the battery life that an inReach of similar has

I also don't think there is any "cookie crumb"/tracking feature with cell phone-sat either; nice for someone(s) on the other end to see where you're at and be alerted if you haven't moved all day or just want to follow along on a multi-day hike/hunt.

But that's just me. Anyone that feels comfortable enough to ditch their inReach/Zoleo at this juncture, have at it.

I’m with ya, won’t be giving mine up. I do think that this will be sufficient for the casual day hiker staying near trails that aren’t exactly remote but lacks cell coverage. If nothing else the phone will never replace the rugged dedicated sos button. My phone recently decided to not find the cell service that was there so being able to communicate via Zoleo to non iPhone users was very helpful.

I would say at the very least if you already own an inreach, take it and keep it active on the cheapest plan for peace of mind for cheap.

Reminds me of circa ‘98 when few people had a cell phone but everyone had a pager. Until the new tech is widely adopted and compatible across operating systems it’s going to be limited in its practicality.
