Has anyone used their health insurance for a specific diet? I know generally you can get supplements and certain products like Pedialyte covered. I know there are deductibles and what not, but I'm curious if the insurance covers stuff once you've met the deductible OR does it just come out to be a qualified medical expense and I use my HSA? It can be covered by the HSA by "letter of medical necessity", but if I don't have to deplete my HSA and can get some payment from the insurance company, that would be fantastic.

My step daughter is just shy of being on a carnivore diet and I have a couple things going on that the Dr. might consider putting me on the carnivore so we're likely going to need to buy a good bit of meat proteins.

You should try hunting. Look up Steve Rinella on YouTube he will show you how.

we already chew through plenty of deer, but if I'm going full carnivore and my step daughter is doing near the same thing, I legally wouldn't be able to shoot enough

Ha ha ha
Lots of trolling going on here.

Most likely the answer if your insurance or HSA will pay for a carnivore diet is 'no'.
You can call them and ask. If they laugh don't take it personally.

I know I made light of this with my comment, but I think that this is an excellent question and an excellent direction to be pointing our energies towards. Getting insurance to pay for healthy food that will prevent downstream illness is one of the best things that we could possibly do. I’d love to figure out how to make this work! We would have a healthier happier society, if that was the standard.

Worked for a health insurer in the past. I am not aware of any private insurance outside of Medicare Advantage plans that would have any sort of grocery or health food benefits coverage. You mention depleting your HSA, but if you aren't already maxing it out, you could just contribute more and then potentially get a medically necessary note from your doctor and pay for all the protein with HSA funds. Routing more funds through the HSA would at least help you save on taxes at YE.

Don't go making sense about things....
Healthy food vs paying for heart, blood pressure, diabetes meds or ozempic etc etc???
Big pharma would not stand for such nonsense. Take your logic elsewhere peasant🤣

The Maryland bag limit is 15 for white tails. The politics in the state kinda suck, but it’s possible to get a years worth of meat here if you’re lucky enough. Plus the Chesapeake bay gives good opportunities for fish and waterfowl

MD is a target rich environment. VA also allows you to kill a heap of deer.

letter of medical necessity is a beautiful thing, I just dramatically upgraded my home gym, and will be adding a sauna in a couple of days too. the HSA took a hit, but the chance of living a healthier life is totally worth it IMO.

And welfare allows people to buy all the trash food they want.
The health industry doesn’t want healthy people.
