Im looking for some suggestions on a packable, insulated, windproof jacket to throw in the pack and throw on while glassing or sitting. I do t have much preference on down or synthetic but synthetic is easier to care for. Also I don’t want to sound like a foil trash bag if I move while wearing it. Ideally the jacket would be solid green or similar in color.

My goal is to be warm while stationary in temps teens and up. Normally I wear my axis jacket over my other other layers but depending on the layers, I end up being cold after an hour or so or, I am so bundled up I dont have full range of motion.

Im looking at the kuiu super down, raab nebitron (not a fan of the velcro cuffs), rab cirrus or skre PTARMIGAN. The rei co-ops are sold out on any color I would prefer to wear. First lite tops have never fit me right so I haven’t even looked at them. I don’t want to spend more than $300 since this will spend most if its lift in a closet or pack.

Warm while stationary in teens = 8oz+ of down for me. Sitka hyperdown is a syn/down blend, larger cut, nice fabric, might be a good one to consider.

Kuiu super down pro, etc in the 5oz range are tough as sitting puffies in teens, for me. Not enough.

Newer FL cuts have been a lot better - might be worth considering if you want to go synthetic, North Range is a nice piece. Not sure about white cloud but that’s heavier fill weight as well.

Would also consider Rab alpine down jacket

I think the new Outdoor Vitals puffy has more fill than the Kuiu. Maybe a good one to look at.

Any reason you can't use a layer system? Rain jacket over a puffy or warm works really well at cutting wind and keeping you warm

I can certainly layer up but since Im typically not subjected with extreme temperature fluctuations, I was looking for a single layer that would address the wind and extra insulation needed when glassing. A single layer like a light to medium puffy should accommodate that. Also, there have been times where I wish I had an extra heavier insulation layer in my pack for the unforeseen weather changes. I always carry a light rain jacket for wind and rain but a handful of times I considered how nice it would be to have a little more warmth without packing an entire wardrobe.

I use an insulated vest that has good wind block. Orvis pro is a very warm vest
that blocks the wind well and has pockets and uses Primaloft Gold and Polartec Alpha. I also
have Rab insulated vest and First lite vest that work well. They keep my core warm and are
lighter than the full jacket. Above 40s and I always have the Rab wind vest that has a thin
fleece like thin liner over my base layer. I have the Rab vest with and without the fleece
and pick the one that suits the conditions best.

Maybe all you need is an ultralight packable wind shirt to throw on under your current system.

The Sitka Kelvin Down windstopper hoody would likely fit your needs. It’s discontinued but you might be able to find one on eBay or the classifieds.
