First off, I didn’t know this was going to turn into a salt lick….

I have this stump at my Wyoming cabin I want to get rid of. It’s pretty solid. I knew that if you drill a bunch of holes in it and fill it with salt, it will decay in about a year.

So that what I did.

What I didn’t realize was that the deer absolutely love licking on the stump!

I have bought about $3 in non-iodized salt that I’ve filled the holes with.

We have two spots that look like they could bury a tractor on our place. Been dumping out a bag or two of cattle mineral mix every year since we bought the place in '19. The deer and pigs have it torn up a couple of feet deep at this point. I think its $12 for 35# so fairly cheap help for our critters.
Never thought to do it on a stump though.

On my property I take paddle bits and drill 1" holes and pour the tractor supply salt in the holes I drill. Just like the results you have, it works well.

Mix I put in a drum and mix works well!

Not suggesting you’re doing this. But would this count as baiting in a state that doesn’t allow baiting, in the event you shot an animal over it?

My assumption is yes, but just curious.

Not if you aren’t hunting ?
But doing stump removal?

I just buy the salt blocks for cattle and put them out on a stump. As it rains the salt leaches into the stump and ground. When the salt block is gone, they lick and dig at the stump. If you look at the ingredients on most "deer minerals" the primary ingredient is salt.

We have had good luck with a mixture of trace minerals, stock salt and di-calcium phosphate. Put a little molasses on it for added attraction.

100% ... BIG issue here because we had one at all our camps permanent stands and they all of a sudden banned baiting of any kind cause found one case of CWD in a joining county. Now what?..
some filled them in with dirt , some just hunted anyway and didn't refresh, some probably put more ...
no one has been "busted" yet but some stories that some have in the area. But they "put a target" on themselves by still putting out corn that surely was seen by air

I hunt in Alabama. I dig a small hole or find a small depression. I dump a 50 lb bag of fine mixing salt in the hole once a year. I been doing this on my lease for 7 years. Most of my licks are now four feet or more across and several feet deep. Once that fine salt gets into the soil and the hole fills with water a few times it gets soaked in I got a good lick that works for me 24/7 365. I have put cameras on them a few times over the years. They indicate deer come by just about daily sometimes several times a day. Once the salt is not visible the deer dig in the dirt and lick their hooves. If the lick has water they will the water itself and the sides. I dont really know if they drink the water or just lick it. I have tried a few different blocks and minerals but the fine salt seems to work best for our soil and deer. Every few years I dump a bag of trace mineral in the licks. Its good for the deer but not convinced it draws any more deer than salt.
