Inexpensive Salt Lick

First off, I didn’t know this was going to turn into a salt lick….

I have this stump at my Wyoming cabin I want to get rid of. It’s pretty solid. I knew that if you drill a bunch of holes in it and fill it with salt, it will decay in about a year.

So that what I did.

What I didn’t realize was that the deer absolutely love licking on the stump!

I have bought about $3 in non-iodized salt that I’ve filled the holes with.

We have two spots that look like they could bury a tractor on our place. Been dumping out a bag or two of cattle mineral mix every year since we bought the place in '19. The deer and pigs have it torn up a couple of feet deep at this point. I think its $12 for 35# so fairly cheap help for our critters.
Never thought to do it on a stump though.

On my property I take paddle bits and drill 1" holes and pour the tractor supply salt in the holes I drill. Just like the results you have, it works well.

Not suggesting you’re doing this. But would this count as baiting in a state that doesn’t allow baiting, in the event you shot an animal over it?

My assumption is yes, but just curious.

Not if you aren’t hunting ?
But doing stump removal?

I just buy the salt blocks for cattle and put them out on a stump. As it rains the salt leaches into the stump and ground. When the salt block is gone, they lick and dig at the stump. If you look at the ingredients on most "deer minerals" the primary ingredient is salt.
