If out of a fast 22 cal 52 grain hornady hp or if your gun doesn’t like boattail bullets the 53 grain hornady hp. Lost count of how many coyotes I’ve killed with these bullets with 220 swift, 220 swift ackley, 22-250, 22-250 ackley, 22 creed over the years.

Tried 53 grain vmax at 3600fps out of a 22-250 later into the winter and it was pretty fur friendly on coyotes but I only killed 20 with it so I’m not completely sold yet but so far it looks good.

In the 223 the 53 grain vmax has been the king for coyotes for me. This is over hundreds of coyotes with these bullets. Not just a handful.

Coyote 300 yards and under?
I'd take the $1500 and pull one of the sh**box 22-250 model 788 out. Those ugly little rascals have broke alot of hearts over the years. I don't like Remington bolt actions, but if a rifle shoots like my 788s and 700 bdl varmint special 22-250, you hang onto them. I traded into all of those for about nothing years ago.

For fur friendly ideally light for caliber and rapid expanding. Other option if fmj no expansion and straight through. Best bet is something light, fast and rapid expanding to catch it in something as small as a coyote to avoid exit.

Sounds like I need a 22creed with light bullets… what is the shortest Barrel I could get away with without reducing the 22 creed potential down to the ballistics of a lesser cartridge?

My integrally suppressed .22 Creed barrel from SWS Rifles has 14 inches of rifling with the final 6 inches as baffles. With 80-gr. factory ammo, its right at 3,000 fps.

My 18" 22x47, with a hair less capacity then the Crapmore, shoots 52 Bergers at 3800.

For thermal hunting I don’t mind a longer barrel -24” to maximize velocity. Hornady reloading data says max on a 1:8 24” barrel 3850fps. Below are some rough figures based on that.

Worst case assume you lose 50fps per inch so 20” barrel puts you at 3500fps still. Example of drops below.

Based on these estimate you give up 2” of drop at 300 (your intended max range) chopping it down to 20”. You can still easily hold for 5-6” of drop for 300 yard shots on your 4” target (coyote vitals), so not a huge change. Personally I want the fps 3500+ for thermal hunting, so based on these estimate 20” would be the shortest I would build one.

Every time I come on this forum I end up adding more cartridges to my list rather than narrowing it down 😅
22-250 checks all the boxes. Factory ammo readily available now. Fast, knocks them down, and easy on pelts. 22 creed with light bullets will do the same but then you’re looking into reloading or paying a lot of $$$. I have a 22/250 for my thermal rig and it will be a creed when it gets a new barrel, BUT I reload. Will be shooting same projectile and roughly same speed just shorter barrel… that’s the plan anyway

Many posters are neglecting these points. The .22-250 and .22 Creed ain’t gonna be fur-friendly. I stick with the .204 Ruger suggestion with the right bullet.
Reading through this forum again. Genuinely curious how much experience you have with any or all of these? I’ve used all 3. 40 vmax in 204 around 3700 fps. Small sample size but I blew large holes with a neck shot and two shoulders (both DRT) and had 2 runners (1 frontal and 1 poor gut shot). This was a sample size of 10ish and went away from 204. 22 creed (75 ELDM at 3350fps) I have had no runners and one bad pelt that was also hit far back. I was very surprised as most shots I can’t even tell where the bullet entered. 22-250 with the 50 grain Blitzkings at 3650 FPS have been amazing. Sample size larger at ~70. I’ve had 1 runner get away and 1 “splash.” I wish I could’ve got my hands on 39 Blitzkings for 204… would probably have me thinking differently about 204. In my experience Blitzkings vs vmax vs ELDM could be a bigger argument than cartridge 🤷‍♂️
