Idaho winter survival

High survival rates, minimal winter kill everywhere that I saw. A lot of deer were lost in 2017 and it definitely set back the deer, particularly in certain areas. The next few years will determine how bad the '17 hurt the herds.

This last winter was a pretty mild one, so winter kills weren't much. Pretty much every where north of the treasure valley was hit extremely hard the year before though, and it is going to take a couple more easy winters to recoup.

Yes, south Central had a pretty mild winter, but we got hammered the year before. Last fall was rough, going to take some time to recover!

The deer herds aren't anywhere close to what they were in '16. I've talked to a few friends at F&G and also determined through my own scouting that an abnormally large number of the deer harvest this fall will be yearling bucks. They are last springs fawns that made it through the winter. Lots of forkies, mature bucks are still tough to come by.
