Idaho Unit 67 for 2020

Fellow sliders,

My brother and I are looking to hunt unit 67 for mule deer this coming year. This will be my first time hunting out of state (from MT). Does anyone have anything to say about this unit? Pros, cons? Size of deer? It looks like pretty rough country!

I've archery hunted there before. Always a couple monsters there. Just rugged country. I just don't like hanging with grizz.

This makes it sound way better than it is. A lot of people hunt it hoping its like the better areas in Wyoming and are disappointed. To me the area has some real issues to rebound from after recent winters.

Issues like low deer numbers, bad genetics, or what?

I've always wanted to hunt unit 67 but I won't go there because of the grizz

I've had good luck finding them. It definitely doesn't have the deer numbers as a whole as other units. But always a few big boys.

The north end also gets slammed by road hunters.

Idaho just released some of their doe:fawn:buck ratio count data. Its posted in the IDF&G website. Interesting stats, it talks about the Tex Creek zone a bunch, Tex Creek is right across the road from 67. You can assume what's going on in Tex Creek is happening for the most part in 67 (Palisades zone).

Idaho just released some of their doe:fawn:buck ratio count data. Its posted in the IDF&G website. Interesting stats, it talks about the Tex Creek zone a bunch, Tex Creek is right across the road from 67. You can assume what's going on in Tex Creek is happening for the most part in 67 (Palisades zone).

I hunted it Oct 10 of 2019 for deer. Spent 5 days in there and never saw and elk, we saw a small buck and lots of black bears. Big country..

Could be wrong on the year, but that unit had a big winterkill in 2010-2011. It didn’t ever recover from that winter. The last few winters beat it up even worse.

Old news is what keeps that unit number popping up in a thread title every now and then.

Sorry i live in northern idaho and here we are mostly known for whiteys. We do have some big muleys but where i am from it is draw only. Sorry for ni help with unit 67 but best of luck to ya. It only takes one, well , maybe two since it you and your brother lol

I live near this zone and have had good success away from the crowds. It takes a few miles, but it's possible.

If you go hike and glass like the people you're wanting info from, you'll know...And I guarantee you won't feel much like posting anything positive on the web if it's any good.
It's way downhill from '16, never really totally came back. Lots of good country with very few deer in it right now. I've never seen a single bit of grizz sign in the unit, I wouldn't let that dissuade you.

I too live in North Idaho and we have some dandy mule bucks but that is due to draw only and very few tags to draw from. I don't know anything about the swan valley area but if you do a little research, maybe ONX and share your thoughts with a F&G biologist in the Upper Snake Field office they may be able to help. My experience it does help to throw some ideas their way and they can give some info on those areas.

Did you end up hunting there? I did some scouting there this summer and not high deer numbers, but was able to find deer and a few bucks in just an overnight trip.
