Idaho Possibly Capping DAV Tag Numbers

I believe the threshold for that tag is 30%, which many of us described as being too low, as it can be “easy” to meet. (Easy as in your examples, which I have no reason to doubt are true.) The 24 year old is a bit curious, as you only get that VA disability rating after retirement or, say, being medically discharged.

Like my quoted response, I and others have mentioned that 50% is likely a more useful number, as there are people that will take advantage of anything, and getting beyond the 50% is a completely different story than the 30% due to the method of calculations. Something will always get through the cracks, I’m afraid.

I didn’t take your post as a suggestion of that at all, and I completely understand the need to regulate the number.

I wish they would double it but with the second group being combat veterans. I like the program and thank ID for it. It would be fine to me to raise it to 60-70% and then double the tags giving that same allotment to combat vets.
Lots of folks out there done there part in OIF/OEF with out getting messed up. Obviously lots of folks before that also but just talking ones I served with.
Either way hats off to ID for program.

Now if some of those other states would step up. We shouldn't have to be the only one to support Vets.

I agree and I also don’t think any state should be pushed tho. It’s a choice for a state and I will support ID 100% for them doing what they have done. My home state you have to be 70% with combat I think or 100% to get any hunting or fishing privileges. Truth is weather I pay full price or not I’ll be hunting ID over other states to support it.

They can’t:couldn’t put the DAV tags in the regular NR pool because then that revenue would dwindle year by year as more of the NR cap is purchased at a deeply discounted rate.

It looks like NR DAV was probably the fastest growing group of hunters Id had to contend with, by a good margin. You fight 20 years of war and you’re going to rack up a shitload of both combat and disabled vets and the cost to maintain the those vets isn’t DOD- so it doesn’t get factored into the cost of doing the business. It’s like the DOD is living for free in there parents house and just have to cover the utilities.

cutting 75% of the tags, cutting them to 50% of there “historic level” was a tough pill to swallow.

of course none of that addresses the elephant in the room IE the only group of hunters that isn’t being “managed” yet is the group that is still growing at a faster rate than any other state....

Bottom line is that none of us is ever going to be happy ever again and we all better get used to it and maybe keep a stiff upper lip while we March onward toward the end.

Deadfall - as a vet, I agree. It needs to be watched because someone out there will take advantage of anything.

But, it’s done.

It now has a cap of 300 DAV elk tags total. The email went out today for additional comment, but it’s already in place starting 1 December, 2020.

I always thank the F&G folks for the program, and am grateful. I stay out of applying for highly limited tags like the Sawtooths, and just hunt an OTC unit and try to stay out if the way while looking for elk. But I don’t understand how rolling back the DAV tag is the solution to hunting pressure? Are we folks outpressuring the large army of dirt bikes and atv’s, for example?

I get the need to regulate, I was just kinda bummed to see that this is the proposed solution. I sent the same comments to the listed email address, but I don’t see this changing. Why not just count it against the NR quota/cap? Bummer.
300 dav tags are almost impossible to get. I see that many outfitters are offering them. As a 100% disabled veteran, I've purchased a tag every year for about 15 years. The last 3, since the reduction in the cap, I haven't been able to get one. Sign in online 6 hours early to buy, and I'm already number 24,555 in the queue with only 300 tags available. Call in hours early and the same issues. I hated seeing the cap go so low. What would have been more fair, imho, is to raise the percentage required to be eligible. 1500 to 300 is a crime, imho.

While I agree the percentage should be higher, Idaho is doing better than almost all other western states when it comes to opportunities for DAVs. Even if they change nothing, vets can still get a hunting lisence for pennies on the dollar.

When all the other states start then we can talk. Until then leave it where it is. The “disabled vets” were taking advantage and it was out of control.
