Yeah I suspected they would limit the tags no matter the feedback received , but that seems to be a major reduction. I agree with the proposals above by Touchdown88 but it is what it is - at least they didn't do away with the program altogether.

The following states it needs to be approved by the 2021 legislature (which is a given); so it won't take affect until 2022 right?

Proposed rules being considered that would not take effect until approved by the 2021 legislature
Docket No. 13-0104-2002

  • Move application date for Landowner Appreciation Tags from June 15 through July 15 to May 15 through June 15 to ensure enough processing time before early LAP hunts open.
  • Limit annually the number of reduced-fee nonresident disabled veteran elk tags to 300 and nonresident disabled veteran deer tags to 500 (regular and white-tailed deer).
It will become effective in 2020 for the 2021 season. As the tags go on sale Dec 1sr 2021.

I'm guessing that idaho will see a huge migration now that many states have shown their true colors in the covid scandal.

Not sure I follow what your saying ? It has to go before the legislature spring of 2021; so therefore if passed would be in-effect for 2022 ? Correct or am I missing something?

Yes.
Docket No. 13-0104-2003

It can go into effect as a temporary commission rule in December and then the legislature can take it up next spring to make it permanent or get rid of it

I know I’ll come across as not caring but the tags have gotten extremely popular and something needed to be done. I was very surprised to see they weren’t in the normal non resident quota and putting them there made the most sense to me, although financially maybe that didn’t make the most sense.

Can any Vets expand on "% of Disability"? Strong chance I get flamed....but I have Vet co workers and friends who have told me they get % disability for hemorrhoids due to MREs and deployment. Some of these vets are serving full duty in Law Enforcement. Many could beat me in a PT standard test.

Two of my close friends have participated in this program. BOTH would have no issues on a 5 day, self supported back country solo hunt.

Is that really the Intent of the Program?

I've very grateful for military service members.

Just be easier to label it a Combat Veteran Preference Program.......

Tyler- very nicely done. I hope there’s an ear (eyes) that at least consider it.

It has already been happening for several years. The housing market in Boise is a shit show. One can only hope the Mormons hold the fort on the political side. Luckily they like to have more kids than just about anyone on the planet. Once Boise turns into Sacramento Light we will have real problems.

The VA rates disabilities by 'systems'. For example, muscular system, cardiovascular system, etc.

The systems are broken down into sub categories that are then rated with a disability percentage. For me, I have a pacemaker and get a 30% disability for that.

Once the VA gives me the 30%, they now view me as 70% enabled. This means that any other disabilities that I claim are taken from 70% instead of 100%. For example, I also have another heart issue, for which I am given another 30% rating. Instead of two, 30% percent ratings equaling 60%, my rating for my heart is 50%.

There are some folks who abuse the system, but I know of a few guys that I worked with who won't get seen by the VA because they don't feel disabled.

Hopefully that explains it, but it probably makes it more confusing.

I think this is what deadfall posted about earlier in the thread, and why someone suggested raising the percentage requirement as a fix.

While it is true that you can get that, it is VERY rare for things like that to get above the 50% threshold. (Even the 30% required for this tag, but still possible with enough things.)

There are no 5% increments, only whole 10’s, and 50% is usually where you start hitting things like permanent back and neck damage, numb/unusable limbs or digits, etc.

It gets to be a very touchy subject I know, but you ask a legit question for sure.

Someone else’s suggestion of just making it 60% as a threshold (meaning, eclipsing the 50%) would eliminate those using it beyond it’s intent.

Edit: and yes, add this to what touchdown88 said. It’s a convoluted way to calculating things, but three 10% “things” don’t add up to 30%, it’s quite a bit less. So if someone has gotten to greater than 50%... I’ll at least say they aren’t smoking you on a PT test at work lol

If that all makes sense?

Great program but it should count the same as any other NR tag towards the cap. Just so you Know I am not knocking Vets as I am one (Viet Nam).

Can't even imagine the sh!t some of you guys went through with 'Nam. Kudos for giving it hell over there, we're an indebted nation. I wish you vets got the same attention the protestors get these days!

The severity of the reduction seems fairly extreme. I understand they need to make a change but this seems to be pretty drastic and almost knee jerk in nature.

Looks like they had open public comment until june 26. I'd imagine a ruling will come whenever idaho releases next year's big game regs

Nonresident rags sold out on June 26. The earliest ever - by several months...

No kidding. Consider we were in a pandemic, unemployment spiked and non-resident tags sold out very fast.

Tell me...who was worried about Covid or their job??

I know a friend hunted elk on one of these tags this year. He's a jacked 24 year old that would absolutely walk me into the ground. I'm not even aware of what disability he has.

Another friend rented my house a while back that would also meet the threshold and he is another that has no functional physical limitations that i'm aware of. He was a navy mechanic, i think his VA disability is from some hearing loss and back pain.

I'm not suggesting we take away benefits from folks who signed up to serve our country. I'm just posting to share that these folks i know well meet the requirements but don't fit any description of disabled to the layman civilian.
