So my buddy wants to go try to fish somewhere that may give us a chance st a steel head for his bachelor party. He was leaning heavily towards clearwater in Idaho. The trip is first week of August and it's a 4 day trip. Plan was to camp along the river with everything in our packs and just enjoy a few days of cly fishing. No boats or pack rafts and no trophy fish goals. Everyone going is just mild fishers who like to get lines wet and eat some fish.

Looking for local input on if this is the best area to go and where is going to work best for the hiking down idea. We are taking 2 vehicles up and plan to park one high and one low. I think the majority of the clearwater is followed by a highway but was wondering if we can get on the backside in 2 spots and go that route?

He really wants to go somewhere that may possibly have a steelhead but we are not 100% committed to the clear water or even Idaho for that matter though we want to keep it fairly short on the drive time from utah.

This is really the only place I trust people input or even can ask around for info like this.

Thanks in advance guys!

August is definitively not the month for steelheading, nor would I consider any of the clearwater where people fish for steelhead to be backpacking country.

If you do want to make it just an Idaho fishing trip I think you would be driving by better fishing than you are heading towards if the clearwater area is your destination.

If you want a steelhead in August you are going to have to go further west. The mouth of the Deschutes in Oregon sounds like it fits what you are looking for somewhat. There will be steelhead in, and you can hike up the river and backpack from the mouth if that is what you are looking for. Steelhead fishing will be best at first and last light, you should be able to catch some smallmouth bass and trout if nothing else. Plan on it being really hot.

If you want to stay with the N. Idaho plan, and are okay with trout fishing, look into Kelly Creek or the N. Fork Clearwater above Dworshak Res.

Thanks for the feedback and PMS. I'm gonna filter through all the nfo and talk to mr bachelorette and see where the plan points us
