Headed to Unit 39 for my first mule deer hunt. Picked 39 due to the close proximity to Boise, and figured it would be more easily accessible considering this will be a learning experience. How bad will it be overrun with hunters? Any advice on choosing a starting point? We will be capable of packing in and staying out up to 5 nights.

There are a lot of ‘road’ hunters to contend with in most areas. If you have a 4 wheeler, you may keep up.

Lots of country in 39 to chase around in. Lots of hunters in 39 to bump into. Get yourself some good maps, stare at them for days, outline the pockets where there are no roads, no trails. Get in shape. Scout. Don't be afraid to explore. Make a plan around the time of the season you will be out. Have patience. Prepare yourself for eventual discouragement. Don't blame the terrain, the other hunters for that...blame the deer. Good luck!
