I just talked to my mom in Montana and after getting a bunch of snow over the last couple weeks or so, it’s now -30°, so it looks like the undulates are going to have a rough go of it in much of the west.

Are those on the feedground in Hailey (does that even exist any more?). If they're on wild feed, they're looking pretty good I thought.

Just out of curiosity, when do your guys’ elk usually shed? I’m surprised to see them still carrying around headgear this time of year.

While bear hunting 3 years ago I watched 2 bulls lock antlers and rattle around on April 22. They didn't push on each other very hard but I thought all 4 antlers would fall to the ground. They both walked away with a full rack.

Well, after all the recent snowfall we've had, I got desperate and did the only thing I know that works to get the snow to stop. I put my plow back on my atv. It was snowing lightly when I started, and Bam; it was raining when I finished. Amazing! But my brilliant moment came to an end quickly, as I checked the doppler radar and realized that it was still snowing at 5500' (I live at about 5000'). I think I'll head for the hills in the morning with my snowplow - laden atv on a trailer behind me to see if it'll stop the snow up high. If it works, I'll probably have to stay put until about May 15th. Desperate times, desperate measures.

they can use any help they can get :)
It's hitting SE Idaho/W. Wyoming again. Not like it was last week, but still very wet with all snow above valley floors

I’m really keeping my fingers crossed that we’ve gotten through the worst of it now in SE Idaho. Temps seem to have broken a bit and the 15 day forecasts (not that you can totally trust them) show 50 degree days on the horizon. Lots of snow has been melting down as well.

Southwest Idaho made it through. Beautiful today and looking really nice through the weekend and into next week. Starting to see some 50s poke through. Elevation still has snow, but with 50s in the forecast, that snow will be melting before we know it.

Sunny today, a bit warmer,, mid 30's---everybody and everything is thankful.
We started throwing hay down for a cow elk with three calves about a week ago. The calves were worn out. But four elk has turned into nine out there wolfing it down.
Warmer weather is coming over the next ten days, We're stopping the freebies and will get them all on their way.
The deer are still hurting in some areas. Wife and I were ice fishing a few days ago--20 nice perch-- :) and saw three whitetail fawns, they were skin and bones-very thin, but still had energy and were pretty spry..
We'll return to the lake Monday and will drop off a bale of pea/barley hay for them.

Great info here. Following this thread with interest. Planning on SE Idaho hunt this year or next depending on herd recovery.

I was just going over the revised proposals for deer in Eastern Idaho on the F&G website. Looks like after the original proposals were commented on and discussed at a round of public meetings, the Commission has decided to eliminate most of the either sex draw tags and shorten most of the youth either sex hunts. They are also curtailing non resident opportunities in at least one unit. Leads me to believe that they encountered an overwhelming position by sportsmen that the deer herds need some pressure taken away to help the recovery from the 16/17 winter.

I can’t speak for all, but for some of the eastern Idaho units the recommendation to cut either sex hunts came from the Biologists after aerial surveys were complete.

For The Upper Snake Region to recommend these changes it must have been pretty bad.

Also these counts were done before the winter really turned nasty....
