I'm usually on the back of a turbo snowmobile in the backcountry this time of year... but a group of us rent a cabin way back in the backcountry every year and do an ice fishing trip. I'm not much the ice fisherman, but managed to pull my personal best up through the ice this year.

We snowmobiled in 14 miles the other day to catch some lake trout.

On the way in came upon a couple moose feeding.
[Dont worry, they didnt go far before they left the road]

Got to the lake and had the place to ourselves. Caught our limit and rode out

Got cut in today, hoping to have a sturgeon on the ice this weekend.

This year hasn’t been anything to write home about, but I just got this guy back. My wife’s employer does a work trip to lake of the woods every other year, I was marking something suspended (whitefish is what I was thinking ) so I set a dead stick and this guy came along half an hour later. 42” and just over 21lbs if memory serves.

I went ice fishing for lake trout today. 28 miles round trip on the snowmobiles.
-21 degrees when we left the trucks

Fishing was good

My Dad, brother, and two sons went to Sturgeon Bay, WI to try for some walleye. Ice conditions were very poor and most of the prime locations were inaccessible or unsafe. We got an air boat ride out onto the big water where there was a large patch of fishable ice, and were able to catch a bunch of whitefish. They said the ice was good and winds weren't strong enough to float us out to open water. The surrounding ice conditions only yards/feet away from where we were fishing didn't have us too convinced. The air boat ride really tightened up the sphincter - pretty crazy crashing back and forth from solid ice into open water, through slush water full of ice slabs the size of cars.... we were like an ice breaker most of the time.

Ice has been pretty sketchy in WI so haven’t been out much to the disappointment of my 9yo and i. He did manage a few Walleyes this year.

The ice in this pic went from 4” to 2” in a blink with a lot of open water further out so i was pretty nervous having him out on it.

Only caught a couple tiny perch, but one of the best weekends on the ice. Nice and crisp early and warmed to napping temps later in the day

About 15” of ice today in central Wyoming. My 5 year old daughter caught an 18” cutthroat before I was finished drilling holes. We landed some nice rainbows last weekend in the 14-17” range.
