what do you consider your comfort zone in the elkwoods? is it a certain style or type of hunting? calling? GMU or state? time of year? weapon of choice? etc

and how often do you leave that comfort zone or what kinds of circumstances could cause you to leave that comfort zone?

Good Question.

I'd say a horseback hunt in a Roadless area of Western Wyoming is my Comfort Zone.

Chasing Tule elk in a 300 acre tule forest in knee deep water at 102 deg F was as far from my comfort zone as I ever have been. But Gawd What a thrill!

It made me realize that There is no such thing as a perfect hunting spot.

My comfort zone- A place where the meanest thing in the woods is a coyote
Not my comfort zone- A place where the mountain lions fight the grizzlies just for fun...
I'll be hunting in the 2nd area this Sept..lol

I have to admit I rarely hunt outside the box so to speak. I try to enlarge the box and will experiment, but I don't push the boundaries much. I personally believe there is plenty of ground inside the box and well within my comfort zone, that I do not need to venture out a lot.

Comfort zone would be the finger draws above the hayfields in MT where when the elk is on the ground we get the tractor and pick them up and skin them and load them in the truck :D outside comfort zone drop camp 5+ miles deep in wilderness and I can't wait for it.

I have to leave my comfort zone just to get to the elkwoods, but I guess thats what draws me to elk hunting.

Last year, I hunted elk outside my comfort zone when I backpacked in nearly 3 miles carrying a 60 lb plus pack, climbing over 2,000 ft in altitude from a trail head started at 8,600 ft in altitude. It didn't take long to realize that at 61, I was too old for the adventure. My hunting buddy and I will be more in our comfort zone this year as the two of us will be using horses traveling to a wilderness drop camp 7 miles from nowhere. Can't wait.
