Scary story. As an old kayaker, I can tell you that rivers are always deeper and faster than they appear from above. The rescue video is worth checking out.

Sad deal. It's obvious he didn't survive. There's no way I would have made an attempt to cross that.

I had good ideas like that when I was 16 or 17 hunting. Wow is all I can say.

Sorry for the terrible situation, but let's call out poor judgment. There's no good excuse for unnecessarily putting one's self in harm's way. No animal or adventure is worth your life.

In addition to the above, crossing late in the day (5:30 PM) adds another layer of danger in terms of S&R and/or rewarming.
