Howa Mini Rifles, Builds, and Upgrades

Got the call this afternoon that my stock was finally bedded. A little longer that I wanted to wait, but oh well - we had some pretty rough snow over the last month so wasn't much else to do. Will be picking it up tomorrow. Looking forward to working up some 6 ARC loads!

Whats your recoil pad? I'd like to see what fits the stockys VG as I'd like a bit of extra LOP
That's exactly why I added it to get a longer LOP.

It's limbsaver 10809. The screw holes don't line up, but the pad fits the shape of the stock well. I ended up drilling new holes and putting a bad of epoxy in them to hold.

Are you bedding the action/lug? My VG and mini will be here soon, trying to decide if I should bed it

Some need it, most don't. Put it together, torque to around 40-45 inch pounds, and shoot it. If it shoots good. No need to fuss with it if it isn't needed. If it is erratic when shot or if it doesn't feel right when you torque it down, then bed it.

I’d bed it from the start. Between me my stepdad and friend they all were loose in the stocky stock. Also as expected I had to dremel out some clearance for the Timney triggers. The safety will make contact with the stock when the safety is off. Also the weight adjustment screw will hit too with it let out where we wanted it. No big deal though. Few seconds with the dremel and bed the lug and tang. I never thought nothing of it when adding after market stocks and triggers. Just part of it.

As soon as the 22arc mini barreled actions show up I’ll bed it swap the trigger and have it threaded at 17-18” then start load work up with 88’s.

Does anyone have experience with the wood stocked variants? I am seriously looking at the Walnut/CF barrel version.

Check the fit and then decide. My last inlet was off front to rear. Front was low, back was high with poor fit up front. Machined it level and then bedded it.

Awesome, so I spend $400 and wait 7 weeks just to get a stock that likely isn’t plug and play

2.335" inside length on a .223 mag so COAL would be shorter.
Dang, I forgot to mention I’m looking at 6mm ARC. No sure if it matters for the Howa.
I’m a fan of the Hammer’s for copper bullets and ryignto see what I can pull off.

I may be unlucky but I almost always have to tweak stocks. So much so I generally have the dremel and bedding material waiting when they come in. McMillan manners high tech specialty stocky etc. I wasn’t surprised at all to have to relieve a little material with the $400 stocky and bed it since I’ve had to with $1,000 manners stocks. Not a dig at manners by any means it’s just more common than not to have to make some minor adjustments to allow for different triggers BM and good barrel clearance. Could be ignorance on my part but I’ve always kinda thought it was just part of modifying factory rifles and building custom rifles.

I believe that you will be happy with the stock even if it requires some small modifications.

Ok that makes more sense. I guess from my perspective, Tikka figured out a stock setup that doesn’t require any adjustment/bedding so I was thinking why can’t a stock manufacturer do the same? I don’t mind junior adjustments, just not looking forward to first time bedding a rifle

If I can bed one anyone can haha. Those bone stock tikkas with factory ammo sure make a fella question himself tinkering and loading for other things from time to time haha.

I know what you mean.
This is rounds 30-40 out of my unmodified T3x with factory ammo.
I think it’s AG composites that says no bedding is required on their stocks, but you never know until you get it and start shooting.
I have a couple stocks on order and am cut to see if any bedding will be needed. Bedding the lug and tang is easy. Doing the whole action definitely is more labor intensive. It worked but wasn’t as nice looking as what my gunsmith can do.

I was really surprised at how well the Boyds stock fit my mini action. The barrel channeled isn't 100% centered, but it's free floated.
