How to layer

Working on purchasing clothes for a mountain goat hunt in BC 2027. I am an east coast guy so layering for cold isn’t something I really need to do. I have a few pcs of first lite clothes that I like so I will probably purchase more for my layering system. So what all is needed to survive the cold and stay warm when layering? Thanks for any advise!
