Summery of this thread.
Sheep guy-Asks complex ballistic question using .270.
RS guys- recommends getting chrono and ballistic solver app.
RS guys- Your scope sounds like the weak link in your rifle setup.
Sheep guy- I don’t think so. Never mind I’ll just hold high or low instead of dial. I don’t need these new stuff.
RS guys- guys ok
Sheep guy- I bought a new rifle in thenew fancy 6.5prc.
RS guys- very nice. What scope are you putting on it. ( Thinking quality like NF)
Sheep guy- A mid level (trash) vortex, cause I from WI.
RS- WTF!

Please don’t use that scope on a sheep hunt. I owned 2, both shit the bed. One on an elk hunt, which caused a dramatic (1’ right at 100) shift in point of impact and a gut shot elk.
Funny, chevy, dodge, ford, hoyt, pse, mathews, ect. Shot Leopold for 45 years which on this site is also crap. All is lost, I should just turn my tag back in. Lol. Carry on bashing all brands except yours. Funny Christenson arms has ads here, my brother bought a 300prc 6 weeks ago, he sent it back 4 times because the bolt wont close due to milling booboo. They told him to seat the factory pill deeper!! No shit.Lol

My only issue was the scope. It’s like taking Walmart boots on your sheep hunt. I had one of those scopes fail. I’m not advocating you become Carlos Hathcock either, just take quality reliable optics.

Wisconsin native so 4x16 viper.
For what it's worth, I had a viper 4-16x44 for awhile (made in the Philippines). At the time, it was the best optic that I had used. It was fine as a scope to sight in and point/shoot. I killed a few animals with it at ranges where I probably wouldn't have known if it shifted.

The problems I found were at the range. When I dialed the turrets up or down, it did not reliably return to zero. More than once, it returned to "zero" with recoil.

I also had a pair of viper binoculars that mysteriously went out of collimation. They were replaced under warranty when they were "unable to repair to factory specifications.

If I were buying a point/shoot optic hat I didn't want to dial, it would be a trijicon credo 3-9x or the night force shv 3-10x with plex reticle.

Good luck with your hunt. I had never heard of desert sheep at 12k.

I read most of this post. I have watched rams by the Brancroft station in CA in the Whites at 12k-13k when I hiked White Mountain, if this is the hunt you are taking about. I did 7 1/2 peaks over 14k in CA. Fitness will be everything...hence my 1/2...I didn't hold up on Mt Sill.

Asking a simple question about how a bullet will act at 12k has we worried about all this experience you have. Shots over 300 yards from the Votex or Leupold scope is a concern. I have chased zero on a rifle for 3 years with a VX3.

And I understand your old school approach. My family has been hunting
that way from the 50's...killed more animals then anyone could imagine... And they have wounded, lost and missed animals also that way...my uncle who is a total animal in the hills shot at a monster mule deer 13 times at 500 yards. They think I am crazy with a CDS turret. I love the Leupold system and fit and finish, how clean it is the flip up eye cups, light weight...its awesome...and it will probably continue to loose zero on me again until I switch.

Get a Nightforce or SFWS.

No. Vortex is known to fail. I know one guy beat you to death. But, everyone else is sincere in the young to make sure you get to shoot.

No, they typically fail so obviously that every day owners notice the problem. Form has tested the razor lht and Gen 3, they didn't do well.
Vortex and others probably have issues with tracking, stop dialing and wearing out the guts of the system, my vortex has held up for years, but I’ve only touched the turrets once when I sighted in my Remington 788.
I am a Burris and leopold guy, no turrets to wear out

The vx3 test posted yesterday disproves the "worn out turret" theory.

Best of luck on your hunt. Everyone on here has their own opinion (including me) and it is always the right one. You sound like you've been around the block a time or two and have more experience than many, if not most, here and I am confident that will ultimately lead to your success.

In any event you've got a tag that the vast majority of us will only dream of drawing so enjoy your hunt, I think you will. Congrats on the tag, on your new rifle, and for all the new friends you've made here on the slide. :p

I would love to see a recap of your hunt later this fall with a photo of you with a big ol grin, a giant desert ram, and your old 270 win topped with a vortex diamondback. Either way it will be a great hunt, I am sure of that.

Don't let the haters get to you. I've used vortex optics for years and I've killed alot of animals with their assistance.

For 99% of point and shoot/MPBR hunters, those shifts aren't any bigger than the actual precision potential of the shooter in hunting situations so they'd never know there is an issue and go on for decades of "rock solid" experience with their optic.
