How Many Rounds?

50 in the box because it'll be full when I load it in the truck. When im hiking around, 3 in the gun and 4 spare in my bino harness. If I can't figure it out with that many something is wrong or I suck and I dont need to be flinging that many rounds thru the air.

At least 100. Enough to sight in a new scope. I take 20 into the back country on a horse trip and ten if I have to carry them, but there’s no reason not to have more than you need in your vehicle.

^^^ This, almost exactly. I'll have 2 loaded mags on me (1 in gun, 1 on belt) plus 1 box in the pack, and back at the truck/camp there several more boxes in an ammo can, for exactly the reasons @EastHumboldt said. Between sighters once arriving and a hunt itself, I don't think I've ever shot more than 8-10 rounds total. But there's just no good reason not to have that ammo can back at the truck. Plus, I mean, hey, there are some zones in NorCal where you just never know if hostile banjos, bongos, or nacrocorridos might fire up at you.

I usually take a MTM box of 50 because we get some long range shooting in after our hunt is over. Shooting 700-1,000 yards is a blast, don’t get to do it often here at home.

I usually bring 40ish rounds..... Plenty in the case you need to re-zero and confirm DOPE. Should leave extra in case you have misses on multiple opportunities.

Things happen and people miss or lose ammo, always be safe and pack plenty.

If I counted correctly we have 28 rounds left in the current batch. We'll try to shoot 8 of those in the next few days then bring 20 to CO. Hopefully we'll shoot 1-2 when we first get there, then hopefully one will be enough for the rest of the trip. Then the balance of those 16-18 leftover rounds will do the rest of the season here at home.

On my first out of state hunt when I was a kid I fired my rifle 5 shots. The last 3 out of state hunting trips I've fired 4 rounds (total) out of my rifle. Three elk, one paper plate.

Shooting long range at rocks always sounds fun to me until I get out there and get caught up in doing whatever is needed to get the animal processed. My attitude is usually that once the hammer drops it's time to get ready to return home. I could see the scenario where that could be fun if you were in a group and tagged out, waiting on others to fill their tags.

I'm hoping next year to take the wife and all the kiddos with me, wherever we go, and thereby remove the impetus to rush home afterwards if 'home' is there with me.

Anything far from home 20.

Day hunts or even a 3 day hunt I take 6, which is a full magazine (4) and two extra in my hip pocket.

I usually bring 20 rounds of my hunting load and 20 of my practice loads with me in the truck. I take 7 rounds with me whether I'm backpacking in or hunting from a camp and have 3 in the magazine and 4 in my bino harness. If I can't get it done with that many rounds I probably need to call it quits for a bit and re-evaluate my life choices..

4 of us in our hunting group will all be shooting 7 PRCs, so there will be plenty of ammo in case someone loses theirs….

21. Everyone brings even numbers so why not be the odd one here. 🤣

1 container of whatever reloads it holds.

Not to derail the thread but what do you guys carry your extra ammo in when in the field?

Depends a little bit if it’s a meat hunt or the tag of a lifetime and what’s the worst thing that can happen. Bringing a second rifle I wouldn’t bring more than 20 for each. A single rifle and spare scope I’d bring 50 in case it had to be sighted in again.

If there’s a big ridge on the drive I know has tons of rock chucks I’ll bring an extra 50 if only one rifle, but more likely a 22-250 and 100 rounds. I’ve shot over 20 rounds at some beady eyes waaaay out there and never touched him. lol

It also depends on where camp is and what guys who have tagged out are doing to entertain themselves. One year we camped in the trees next to miles of sagebrush well away from the trailhead and anyone in camp during the day was having a blast setting up targets way out there and shooting from camp. In that case an extra 50 rounds is well worth it, but a 243 and 100 rounds is even better.

I wrap three cartridges in a triangle with two wraps of electrical tape (folded over flag end to unwrap). They don’t make noise, one goes in a front pants pocket, two in the top of my day pack.

Thanks all. The responses were about what I anticipated. I was curious if my practice of taking 40 rounds was odd. I have tendency to be overly redundant when packing, usually leaving me with too much stuff. I guess you don’t need it until you do…..

My baseline is 20-40 rounds. I start out with two full boxes in my ammo pouches. If I finish a box, I replace it.

I take a couple boxes. But then, I don't pick oddball cartridges or loads that I can't readily find in a store somewhere for that very reason. Just in case.

If you use a man's gun like a .338 lapua. You only need one round.

Day hunts i only take what my gun holds, which is either 4 or 5 depending on the rifle. If im backpacking I take another 10 rounds.
