How Many Rounds?

I have 75-80 loaded up to take with me this year, but there's a range with steel out to 600 on the way and I'm going to stop and do some shooting.

In the field its one Tikka mag in the gun and another on the bino harness, typically.

Flying for an out of state hunt I have brought 2 boxes=40 rounds. I only CARRY either 6 or 8 rounds when hunting (2 full mags, 3+3 or 3+5 or 4+4 depending on gun). 40 rounds is enough to check my zero, re-zero if needed, and still have my 6-8, plus extra. I virtually always come home with at least a full box of ammo.

I’ve found myself down to 15 or so without much time to reload and that’s fine too.

One full mag in the gun, one full mag in my hip pocket. One year I stalked in on some elk, I had dropped my pack about 100 yards behind me. Shot a rag horn bull at about 75 yds through the brisket. He was lying down facing me… only shot I had. I’m pretty sure if I was patient that shot killed him, but he stood up and started wobbling away up the slope away from me. Afraid of losing him I lobbed 3 more at the back of his neck, but they were hurried shots from a not very good position. All missed.

He stopped moving uphill and just stood there. It was then I realized my spare ammo was in my pack. I sprinted back to get some more. When I returned maybe a minute later he was gone. I started walking down where he was and spotted him below and to my right, just standing there broadside. I put one more through his boiler room and he went down. That shot was probably unnecessary I learned when we field dressed him, but I had no way of knowing that then. The first shot had gone through one lung, the intestines, and lodged low in his back leg. If I’d just waited he would have keeled over in a couple minutes from blood loss.

But the lesson I learned is don’t leave your spare ammo some where you’ll forget it. Cuz you will.

My last travel hunt i had a 50 rnd box of reloads for main rifle and 2 boxes factory for backup gun - in truck. Shot muley w backup gun. Go figure.

If we’re talking about in pack. 3 or 4 in rifle and 10 in pack.

Just zeroed new rifle at 200 today. Have 14 rounds left of that box. Got zeroed 2 inch high at 100 w clunker rounds. Then 2 3-shot groups at 200 w pricey hunt loads. Think that’ll do for the season.

I typically have 2 20 round plastic reload boxes. I will almost never carry more than about 10 out in the field. The spares are mostly for having to resight a dropped scope or similar troubles.

I take two full boxes of factory ammo. I have no explanation for this habit or the logic behind it. Its just the way I roll. I am not a wilderness hunter. I rarely fly and drive my crew cab truck to my hunts so not exactly
hurting for space.

Both my partner and I each took 40 rounds of handloads on our most recent trip. Seemed like a good number should we have to re zero one of them.

So this trip I took 38:
25 handloads with 168 ABLR
3 handloads with 175 elite hunter
10 factory Hornady 175 ELDX

Shot two 168’s at elk. One miss and one hit.
Shot 9 168’s at steel targets
Came home with 27 rounds.

I like the idea of taking at least 40. I always check my zero after traveling. I never need that many but I like being over prepared.

I brought 100 rounds each for my boy and I. After checking zero my boy had a bunch of fun shooting steel out to 800 yards. He ended up shooting 50 at steel and 1 for his goat. I only shot 10 at steel and 1 for my goat. Yes I brought too many but I would do it the same way next time.

if travelling with another person, I always put a spare box of my ammo in their luggage and vice versa.

I carry 20 rounds. I have 10 loaded in a folding pouch. I also keep a few tucked into the bino harness. I’d hate to be digging out of my pack when I might need a round.

20. 13 in a small pouch. A few in my bino harness. 5 in my mag.

I usually take a full 50 round box with me on trips. Mostly because a partial box bothers my ocd. But also because I just know that the time I don’t something bizarre will happen and I’ll need it.

But when I’m actually hunting I carry 3 in the gun and an extra 5 in my bino harness. A few of my guns have Short Action Precision ammo holders on the stock so those ones will have 2 there as well.

Took 20 last trip. Shot 0.

Took 6 to the range Thursday. Shot 6. Was glad of it when I realized those 6 empties were all the brass I had for this weekends youth deer hunt. My wife went out of town in the car with the rest of our ammo in it. We’re using 2x fired brass this morning. Six ought to suffice.

60-100 on the trip.

I shove reloads back into factory boxes and tape them up. Easier to distribute or leave some behind in a vehicle or tent or cabin over a big 50 round reloader's box.

I want enough to shoot rocks that are way out there after the mission is complete.

While I'm hunting I have 2 mags in my bino harness:
- 2 waters rifleman 10 round mags if I have 223...one 4 rounder in the gun.
- 2 factory orange 5 rounders if I'm carrying a standard case and 1 3 rounder in the gun.
- If I have my 6.5 PRC its 2 4 rounders in my pouch and 1 3 rounder goes back and forth from the pouch to the gun for condition 3.

Cole tac makes a 40 ct wallet. So I fill one of those. In the field I have 3 in the mag, 2 on the rifle and 3 more in my bino harness.
