In far west central NM at 8k feet. Still mid 80s. No bugles, from an elk, in two days. Packing a gallon of water and coming back to truck fill up and head back out couple later trying to locate something. Forecast looks better by Friday and of course have to leave Saturday night. Going to be a long week shows it getting worse before it gets better.

You’d think sitting water for 12 hours in 95 degree weather would make elk show… nope😂 but I think I lost a few lbs in the hell box

Come to Colorado
Had CO bulls bugling every day from day before opener to today, really picked up yesterday and this morning...most were shutting up between 8-9...caught busted drawing back on a big boi saturday evening, even with his head behind a tree... western co, public land

Heard my first bugles this morning! Sounded like a lone bull in the meadow below my place, always my favorite noise of fall!

Closest town to where I’m hunting is near 100 degrees friday

I made a game plan for 4 days that will keep us in dark timber near water for the whole trip. Have enuff different locations to not hunt the same stuff twice during the trip.

Every 300 yards or so we’ll hang out and do some cow and calf calls for 20-30 minutes.

It’s going to be a hot, monotonous trip doing this over and over. On the bright side I think it will be pretty much impossible to not call in a couple bulls if we stick to the plan. It will just be a matter of getting a shot in the thick timber and blowdown.
Followed my plan. Didn’t work!

Spent the whole trip around fresh tracks, and rubs from this year. Never called anything in, and never bumped a single elk in the thick timber.

Elk hunting is pretty tuff with daytime temps over 80 where I’m at.

Not much elk movement during daylight hours.

Not to mention the crowds up there

Have heard of a couple good ones taken already. Neither was calling. One guy was sitting a trail to water and the other stalked a feeding bull at first light.

About to hit triple digits again this weekend here in Oregon. Lots of fires closing units. Hunted opening weekend (HOT) and found elk each day. However, all were silent and ran from a single cow/calf chirp. Ground was like walking on potato chips. Headed back out next week if the weather holds.
