I called my rancher friend up in North Park after I saw this thread and told him about it.

He said the Forest Service already called him to give him a heads up as he has cattle grazing allotment in the possible area of the gathering

It's been going on since the 70's and they fight legal battles with the USFS every year over access. Argue its their right to peaceably assemble on public lands.

Exposure to this group in the early 90's is what opened my eyes to public lands an our ability to use them. They used to do a good job of cleaning up after themselves, sorry to hear that's changed.

In general times have changed, I bet in the 70’s the woods looked different after hunting season than it does now. Little respect for the land when it isn’t in your backyard.

I remember when they came through Dillion MT in 2000.
It was a sight to see with all the converted school buses and dirty dreadlocks in a ranching town. There were some nappy dirty hippy girls outside the Rocky Mountain Supply store that had a sign that said something along the lines of will trade sex for drugs. And you would need lots of good shit to want to get with them.
IIRC there were over 50 unclaimed dogs left on USFS that the Beaverhead Humane Society had to deal with. Stuff got stolen that wasn’t locked up. They are Americas version of Gypsies.

I lived very close to where this incident happened, some of my friends and co-workers were the first responders and said it was brutal and they were surprised that the victim - who locals knew very well - had even survived. I remember seeing him a year or two after it happened and he had a massive scar that spanned his entire neck. One week prior to this incident another friend of mine who lived about a mile from Ruby Gulch dragged two of the Rainbow gatherers off of his property while still in their sleeping bags because they started a campfire on his property and left it burning in a heavily wooded area. These gatherings are very far from orderly and peaceful. I've seen and had to help clean up the awful messes left behind and It's a small scale environmental disaster. It's just a bunch of gypsy transients with criminal records and outstanding warrants looking for a place to do drugs and party on public lands around the country.

I will add to those that say Colorado is the deserving place for this given the political climate, sounds like it wouldn't be a very good state for folks to hunt either. That article is about A camp which stands for addicts, alcoholics, and assholes. They are a bad group of people for sure. The vast majority are just aimless, A camp is spooky. Looks like Mad Max characters, for real.

Had a guy I grew up with got in trouble for shooting up one of the Rainbow people illegal camps about 25 years ago. He's a county commissioner now lol. They moved on after that, I'd say he did the county and NF a public service.

They have no respect for the land they hold their gatherings on.. If you have the unfortunate opportunity to be on duty or have to deal with these folks, I suggest you do it on well trained horses. It's the only way to move throughout them without them mobbing you. They love to surround you and give you their love and hugs and direct you away from the illegal activities going on. They will still try if you are on horseback, hence having a well trained horse you can just push through them.. Good luck to whoever gets that assignment.

Sounds like a bucking horse would be a good mode of transportation through such place…

I am not saying I would ever actually do something like this, but I could see the temptation to round up a crew armed with long range paintball guns loaded with the full color spectrum and make the title "rainbow family" more fitting.

Paint balls are soap based, so even though it sounds fun, you would likely kill some folks, they aren’t able to metabolize soap… it’s like putting salt on a slug.
