I'm in the market to purchase a tent thats a better suited fit for some high country hunts that i have planned in the coming years. I'm just curious what shelters/tents others like to use on high country hunts. I haven't hunted true high country before. I currently own a S/O cimarron but I'm thinking about getting a freestanding tent like a Durston x-dome or Tarptent rainbow. It seems like a lot of people like X-Mid, but I'm a little hesitant because it sounds like its a little more cumbersome. Also, I read that the x-mid has a big footprint.

I went with the X Mid 2 cause I wanted more room. It’s only a few ounces heavier than the 1 person. Haven’t had issues with the footprint. Easy to set up. I sometimes just use it like a tarp and don’t use the inner mesh. Just throw my pad on the ground. I really like it.

Lots of good options out there. If I was in the market I would check out Argali tents. Nemo, Big Agnes and Six Moon Designs are worth looking into also.

I use a bivy and tarp. Sling fin tarp (same as stone glacier) and borah bivy. The foot print is tiny compared to tents like the argali or others. Where I hunt in the high country, finding flat space can be an issue, so I want a small foot print.

I've used a KUIU Mountain Star solo for several sheep hunts, back packing trips, and numerous remote floats. It has always done me well...very light-weight, small footprint, and easy to set-up.

I've been in some moderate rain and an inch of snow with no problems. I do pretreat with Obenauf waterproof spray...just because it's Alaska..

I've not been in super heavy winds with the Mountain Star.

I ran the XMid 2 at 12k feet for two years. I find it a finicky pitch and defintely needs more space than I would like. I switched over to the MLD Duomid in SilPoly with BPWD custom Solomid DCF nest. This whole set up comes in at 1 pound 14 ounces. Huge vestibule foot print but very small nest foot print and off kilter pitches much easier IMO. It also allows me to yard sale my pack and bow within some overhead cover.

I have an Akto, various Big Agnes, Kifaru Tut, Durston…it’s for me the slickest set up I’ve ever run at a very comfortable pack weight. I’ve debated selling off mostly everything but need to consider my wife and kids on some of these adventures 😂
