Im open to other suggestions on caliber I suppose... Anyone have better suggestions on caliber to run alongside my .308? I dont plan on shooting out to 800. Just really looking for something flat shooting like a laser.

You get a lot better bullet selection in .264" and .284" don't know why the .268" bore gets no love but it doesn't. A 280 or ai a 7mm-08 7mm rem mag 7wsm 7rsaum 7stw or 7 ultra mag will shoot laser flat also .264 win mag .260 6.5-284 6.5-06 or ai version will also shoot laser flat. Get what you want there really aren't any bad choices if you really want a short action go with one of those.

I don't own one, so opinion only, but the 270 WSM sure has impressive ballistics (for it's class) and you can get it in light fast short action guns. It's always intrigued me as the perfect mule deer caliber for mountain hunting.
Let us know what you decide on and how she shoots.

Right now the 6.5 Creedmoor is peaking my interest. Flat shooting round elk, speed goats and deer better look out. Weatherby Vanguard series is a heck of a deal in this caliber.

I wouldn't overlook the 6.5's
I have two .260's in my arsenal and will take it way before I walk out the door with my .270wsm.
B/C is phenomenal, and a better selection of bullets now than when Remington introduced the .260.

I'm not sure why you would take a 6.5 (260)with 140 going 2750-2800 way before a 270 wsm going 3150-3200 with 140. I could see for targets or practice but for hunting that's a big loss. The 6.5 has little better bc but it isn't much, certainly not enough overcome 300 fps

I agree but would take it farther. Why not just get a 7 RM? Lots of components out there for a 7 RM.

Killed a bull elk this year at 402 yards with the 6.5 creedmoor. Insanely accurate, killer factory loads, low recoil, light, flat, compact, blah blah.

Anyone have experience with the 26 Nosler?

I think you know I favor the 7 RM ;) when talking about pushing the limits you take every advantage you can. NEHunter sounds like he is keeping it well inside the extemes. In these ranges I don't think there isn't a big enough reason to have anervous break down. Inside 600 or so yards I don't think the 270 wsm will lose that much when compared to a 7rm. For the record though I do love the 7 RM

If you think you'll keep the rifle for a long time, I'd check the sales figures for the .270wsm and may be even talk to Winchester about their continued manufacture of rifles chambered in the caliber as well as manufacture of brass. Some of the short mags by the various manufacturers are lagging in sales and are being discontinued I believe. It would suck hard to get a sweet rig only to find the components expensive and hard to come by down the road. If it was me, I'd jump on that Winchester extreme weather you mentioned and not look back.

Personally it comes down to fit, form, and function for me and the old verbiage of putting the bullet where it belongs. I have a plethora of calibers to choose from when I walk out the door. 6ppc, .257Bee, two .260's, .270wsm, two 7mm-08's, .280, 7mag, and a .300RUM.
The area I hunt will always dictate which rifle I choose way before what I'm hunting. I'm not hunting armor plated elk & they will never know the difference between a 130gr 6.5 Accubond or a 140gr .277 Accubond.

Dad & wife have filled the freezer with several in the 350-375 range with the .260. I've been looking hard at the Nosler 26 - brass is already out on the shelf.
The ballistic data Nosler initially put out was definitely stacked in their favor when they compared it to other cartridges, but still a good looking round.

I used a 7 WSM the last few years and have really enjoyed it. 140 AB's at 3150 if I remember correctly. Better selection of bullets than the 270, plus I just never liked that 270 caliber....no real reason, but I have calibers in 25, 6.5, and 7mm and like them all. I have a 25-284 that is one of my favorites and would be great on the deer and lopes, it I'd go bigger on the elk.
