I recently converted my Knight Ultra-Lite from musket caps to a bare 209 primer system using the official Knight conversion kit. Everything seemed fine at first, but now I’m running into an issue: after firing, the 209 primer gets stuck in the pocket of the bolt—as seen in the attached photo. I have to use needle nose pliers to remove it each time.

Dry firing multiple times doesn’t help loosen it, and it’s becoming a consistent issue.

My question is:

Do I need to shim the breech plug’s primer pocket?

If so, where can I buy the correct shims for this setup?

Shim the current BP may help. I ended up buying an after market BP from LeHigh Defense. Worked better but still had an occasional one get stuck. I have since ditched using both 209 and Black Horn Powder. Went back to #11 caps and T7 powder. Oh and I ditched my Knight UL and bought a White .451. I’m much happier. 😀

It is more how well the Breech Plug Primer Pocket is machnined. This is a know issue with Knight Rifles as well as blow back, I tried a SSK Custom Breech Plug before Knight sent a Cease & Desist Order to SSK stopping them from Offering their Breech Plug. So that said shimming your breech plug is a "one and done" because you can't remove the shims as they become permanent. Other concern is having to replace the Vent Liner as they are to be only good for maybe 100 shots as the vent liner gets larger and lessens the ignition of the powder.
I opted to get a Breech Plug that uses a tungsten carbide bushing that is to be good for 1000 shots before the bushing needs to be replaced. The SSK BP was too tight and the primer did not even slide in using both the Fed 209A & the Win W209 Primers. But learn from a freind that his Lehigh the primer fell right in (loose)? ( which as a lot of blow back and requires a lot more thorough cleaning.) I sent my barrel / action of my Knight Extreme out to a Gunsmith that does a custom upgrade so there is to be zero blow back. But it is not low cost with S&H to him is $230.00. As not even firing a primer just closing the bolt required pliers to get the primers out. Now They pop right out.
Just what I learned.
Good luck

Would you mind sharing the name and phone number of your gunsmith? I'm exhausted with this issue and would just like it fixed for good.

Yes, two different brands and same problem
Which two brands? They all have slightly different dimensions.

And how much powder? Are the 209s bulging? (I have the same issue in a Knight Peregrine with max loads).

And….appears to be filthy - you’re getting a lot of blow by.

Interesting….I just had the same issue exactly with the Disc Extreme. I thought it was pressure too since when working up a load with a center fire over-pressure will cause the primer to pancake. But it isn’t. Higher pressure can make it worse though. 120 gr of BH209 (by volume) actually pushed the firing pin back. I had to dis-assemble the bolt and take out the firing pin. Had to drill the primer out of the bolt face. With that kind of blow by and back pressure it is downright dangerous IMO. What I found out a few days ago is that Knight has had this problem with their bare 209 primer breech plugs for over 15 years now. Some shooters have used an elaborate shimming process in the primer pocket to solve the issue. I am going to call Knight tomorrow. They really should replace the breech plugs and do a safety recall. This is BS!

Knight seems to be more or less going out of business (again). I doubt they’ll answer the phone. Even 6 mo ago their customer service was non existent….

A stock company buying a rifle company just to sell their stocks doesn’t seem like a very “worth while” business venture to me. Their guns aren’t cheap either.

In 2011, Knight Rifles was purchased by Plastic Industries, Inc. with headquarters in Athens, Tennessee, although the warranty center remains in Centerville, IA. PI manufactured firearm stocks.

Yes there is an issue and has been as you see as this was posted back in 2016. Knight has not done a lot to correct this. (Critical Machining of The Breech Plug) Just know that shimming the primer pocket is a 1 and done and not all primers are the same in size. And some can't get the popular ones. Whether Win, Fed, CCI not all sellers have or sell them. And paying Haz Mat gets costly. Some don't sell a 100 pack just 1K Brick not sure how many will ever use them unless you are a multi ML Owner and Shoot a heck of a lot. I could see maybe 10 a year confirming your ML is ready for the season and maybe 25 or 35 to find the right powder load but other than that unless you are a also a target shooter which most aren't, just hunters trying to extend their hunting whether ELk or Deer Seasons as some states have a special ML Season that gives some more time afield.

Over shimming and blowing a primer would not be a welcome event….SB in his post stated that Knight can and will fix the issue. I couldn’t find a phone number to call Knight customer service. They want an email these days so will see what their reply is.

Have the same issue with 2 UltraLights...no shit took me about 3mins to get the spent primer out trying to reload after shooting a bull this year...I just carry a small flathead in my bino harness to be able to pop it out, but even that took a long ass time this year...Not ideal

Maybe back in 2016 Knight Rifles (Per that Old Post) & Had some CS but it is now 2025. And as you see they don't even provide a Phone Number to call. That seems to show somethings aren't good as they were.
Sad that the tolerances are so varied and yet today with CNC Machining these tolerance should be repeatable.
And then the QC. Just what I continue to see this is the 3rd owner of Knight -Was first by Tony Knight then Pradco Outdoor Brands (ceased production of Knight Rifles in 2009) and 2010 - Plastics Indutries Inc. bought the company.
