Guys that drive a long ways to hunt, what are your less common(but important) pieces of gear/tools you're sure to keep in the truck?

I'm surprised how few people list hand wipes. I always have some. And a few bottles of water. I rarely drink bottled water, but I always have a couple in the truck.

Change a tire or deal with something and it's nice to KNOW you can clean your hands drink some water.

Lots of great info here. But definitely something to wipe your butt with. I prefer paper towels as they are more abrasive than TP.

We leave in 2 weeks to head to Montana for our elk hunt. Its 400 miles to my friends house, then another 2040 miles to Montana from there. I'll put every bit of 5000 miles on my truck the last 2 weeks of September and first week of October. Our last trip in 2022 was smooth sailing with only stops for fuel and food.

My Tundra has a small lift and bigger tires and it dawned on me this morning, I should probably have a plug kit and small compressor available on such a long drive. I pretty much always have basic hand tools and a few power tools in my tool box, but those are two things I dont keep on hand that could really save a lot of time and hassle if the need were to come up.

Anything else that ya'll have taken that you were glad you did? I hate over packing, but I also like to make sure I'm covered.

Obviously have a great packing list, but it's primarily focused on gear, clothes, etc. Not so much emergency situations.

The tire plug thought I had this morning has me pondering if theres anything else I should keep in mind on such a long haul from home.

So, what did you take with? What items were worth it? Which items no so much?

Trailer did good. a cross country trip does about warrant pulling the hubs and reg regreasing them

-tow strap. Didnt need, but glad to have it. I have needed it since, and it now stays in my tool box

-normal size wrench/ratchet set. Didnt use for emergencies but was useful at camp a couple times

-My impact drill and charger. Not needed for emergency but did use it a couple times

-Jump box/air compressor combo. Found it on amazon. I dont go anywhere without it anymore. Didnt need it hunting but have used it more than I ever would have thought since then. Great little thing to leave in tool box or under seat

-Tire plug kit. Not needed, but smart to have.

-Fuel can. Not needed, but peace of mind on long stretches where you dont see civilization for hours.

-big roll of gorilla tape. used that way more than I thought we would have


Other than that, it was just normal stuff I pretty much always keep in the tool box or under the back seat. The one thing I would probably add next time is one of those hitch carrier things. We were able to fit everything OK, but it was piled so high it blocked even the camera on my digital rear view mirror. Not the end of the world, but I'd rather see out my rear view if its an option

Yes. Cargo carrier/hitch hauler. If you get one, I’d suggest one with a rise (2” or so) and a one piece construction for the box. The bolted together ones that come in two halves will rattle like crazy. And the 2” rise will give you a bit extra ground clearance and keep the scraping to a minimum when going uphill or through a ditch.

The rise also helps to not block the license plate. I have a flat one and no way to see the plate so I remove it and zip-tie it to the back of the rack.
