Grizzly-1, Hiker-0

Here’s the deal.

There are roughly 76 million dogs in the United States. Most are pets that live inside with their owners.

There are roughly 630000 bears in the US. None live inside with their owners.

So let’s run a stupid experiment to prove your asinine comparison.

I will live with my short hair.

You pick a bear, brown or black. I don’t discriminate. Have it move in with your family.

Let’s see whose mammal attacks first.

Deal ?
spot on

I feel for the guy and his family, a terrible loss.

Heartless dickhead warning:
Bears taking out locals is what we need more of.
When they get tired of this happening that’s when you see some change. Bear get a tourist I’m sure they all think to themselves dumb ass didn’t know how to handle himself around bear country, but when it’s one of them they can’t say that.

Speaking of dogs...about 30 people a year are killed by domestic dogs.

Six-eight times more likely to get killed by fido than yogi. Around 4.5 million dog bites a year as well...know how many people a year are bit from bears?
You ever try to get f&w to validate a livestock kill done by wolves? I would say 10% success rate would be highly embellished.

They come out or look at pics, then tell you to bury it... then 3 days later need to pull a sample, which can't be done now.....so it can't be confirmed. Some erected fences around the carcasses but the birds "contaminated" the samples.

You're never going to sway Tim Treadwell or buzz. They have seen how docile the Katmai bears are and preach it.

Coming from a guy who stuffed a 10mm in a bears face and killed it.

Where black bears are not hunted they are not afraid of people...go right into campsites for food...

Where black bears are hunted regularly they are shy of people...

Same behavior exhibited by deer.....state park deer (never hunted) will eat grass 20' from people sitting around a campfire. Vehicles with the 'deer watchers' drive past at 20-30' away and the deer ignore them. Where deer are hunted that type of behavior in almost never seen....hunting pressure, especially firearm hunting pressure definitely effects how those animals behave. You can see the difference between non hunting areas, bowhunting only areas and firearm hunting areas...very easily if your in tune with how the animals behave in those areas...
I generally don't buy into the the "hunting pressure will teach bears fear of people", but there is a lot of truth/evidence of its effect on other species in this post...

Buzz, you might come up with the WORST analogies possible. It’s not even apples to oranges, more like apples to Orangutans.

I’d love to see four bears/year. That’s enough to get the ball rolling. The worst thing to ever happen was to put them on the list. All they had to do was keep a tag or two per year and they would have easily escalated the number of permits over recent years. Now it takes an act of god to allow states to manage them

The ESA is necessary and it works. If we hadn't put them on the list they would be extinct. The problem is not the ESA, it's the court system that allows these frivolous lawsuits from "environmentalists" to continue to clog up the process.

We should be celebrating the success of bringing these bears back, but instead these awful groups continue to leech money that should be spent on conservation and give it to lawyers.

While I mostly agree, it’s easy for people (especially ones that don’t live here) to think it would have been a different outcome if he was carrying. There’s simply not enough time to react during most of these attacks. This is coming from somebody that has carried spray, a 44, and an air horn on many shed hunting trips. I recognize that this could have easily happened to me as I’ve shed hunted the same area for over 20 years. It’s as dangerous now as it’s ever been. All we can do is try to learn from it. I feel awful for the wife and kids. Sad deal all around
You shed hunt the same area? Me too.

Just read in the Billings paper that they found an overdue hiker outside of Livingston that had been killed by a grizzly. Be careful out there, bears are out and hungry!
How many people have to get messed up or killed by grizzlies before we can get the advocates to realize they aren’t Paddington Bear? It’s been generations of bears that have lost their fear of man. Bear spray is like axe body spray to these things anymore.

Prayers to the family.

According to the paper today, appears they have ruled out a predatory attack (ie not trying to eat him) and the bear will not be pursued.

We’ll have a grizzly hunt again in Montana at some point, but it’s going to take a lot of work. The groups bringing these suits are well funded and with the ability to judge shop, puts us and state management agencies behind the eight ball.

I saw that. It seems insane to me to not pursue and kill a bear that killed someone regardless of circumstances.

Or a poor black fellow, just tryin to get by.

Grizzly bears have become a industry here in Mt. I think people would be surprised at how many people in gov make a full time living on a animal that people can't use and is only awake 8mo a year.
