Governor Tags - Deer, Elk, etc.

How about a 1/8th percent sales tax that goes to conservation. Why are those the only two options?

Great idea, you want every Subaru driving shitbird to have a financial seat at the table? Not to mention name a state that can actually manage its own budget well..

I understand and empathize with both sides of this issue. If you can sacrifice 1 or 2 governor tags for 10x or 20x the money for conservation, then you might call that a win. Makes sense, economically.

However, I have personally seen landowner tags and farmers cornfields become commodities that go to the highest bidder, and push out anyone who doesn't have the money. Doctors and lawyers and such from Denver offering $40,000/year to waterfowl hunt in eastern CO, or billionaires from WY buying landowner tags in Nebraska for $90,000, and it prices everyone else out. Can't blame the farmers though, I'd probably do the same thing in their position. This is all becoming common and normalized.

It becomes an issue of the "haves and have nots". It's not a problem when 1 or 2 tags are on the line, or 1 or 2 farmers fields. But what happens when when people see dollar signs and 50tags or fields are up for the auction, or 100 and on and on.

That's what concerns me for the future of this activity. It's not 1 or 2 governor tags. It's the trajectory that monetizing this activity creates for us and our children in 20-30 years

Look at Arizona as the will of the people did away with auction tags and moved to a raffle system.

They always had both until last year, AZ could have twice the elk it has if the land owners were allowed to make a little revenue off them. Instead they’re murdered on an industrial scale in any unit that doesn’t have national forest.

Everyone already has a seat at the table. Everyone votes, anyone can attend comission meetings. This argument went from "we have to allow rich people to buy tags because it's better for the resource." To "why do we care what's better for the resource, I don't want a soccer mom paying to help wildlife." I care about the resource and the best way to take care of the resource is through a new funding model.

I would love to support Arizona's decision. I strongly support this. Sadly you have to be in the state to purchase tickets. One year I will there and spend so much money on these raffle tickets.

You’re entitled to your opinion, if you ask the average hunter if he cares about sheep restoration, they don’t. Asking them to pay more to even support their local biologists, and they’ll cry about how it’s a rich man’s sport etc at a 2.00 tag increase.

Right now, no matter what you want to believe, in most states fish and games voices that they listen to are ranchers, sportsmen, and other consumptive uses.

Most states the money from auction tags goes to the species or ah&e programs, besides your feelings, how do these tags negatively affect you?

Fish and wildfire funding is at the lowest priority for nearly every states general fund. Even if it was earmarked, somehow they’d end up using it to fund the homeless, gay pride rallies, or some other stupid stuff. We can’t get schools and roads paid for, somehow you think we’ll get priority funding for dfws..

They affect my feelings. The same way your feelings are affected by the public having a financial impact to the resource.

And actually a won a raffle tag this year. I have been a strong proponent of raffling tags instead of auctioning them so that rednecks like me have a chance. I wouldn't be planning the best elk hunt of my life if this tag wasn't raffled.

The average raffle tags are won by the same guys that buy auction tags.

Congratulations and I’ve had a couple buddies get them as well with small entries, but by and large they won by the same people many times year in year out.

$150-$200k for 9 animals across a state that’s just over 120,000 square miles, I’d say that’s a win for wildlife no matter how you look at it.
Conservation without money is just conversation!

NM has a raffle for just that, win this one and you can hunt any unit. I’ve seen them do both raffle and auctions for all species.

Depends on a lot of factors. Gov tags generally do from what I’ve read.

That's fine. Raffle doesn't block out Joe Plumber. Sure it reduces his odds but it's not a zero-sum game.

The most mystifying thing on this entire forum, is watching a tiny fraction of us pro-freedom, pro-liberty, pro-capitalist, gun owning, hard working people, turn into absolutely raving marxist lunatics when it comes to governor tags or landowner tags. Absolutely unhinged, cracker-culture hatred of "the rich", completely unable to see how we all get more tag opportunities through the conservation work that comes from those systems.
Yeah, same here.

its like watching the rich folks move out of Seattle and the Mayor laughs and says, "Bye Bye" 30,000 jobs lost, highest commercial vacancy rates.... these Socialists will get a rude awakening when home prices are underwater and their taxes skyrocket to cover the shortfall.

Where is the money for the F&G going to come from to make up for the, $450k sheep tag, $275k deer tag and all of the other one off tags sold?

The answer is of course; You, ya dumb bunny. They would have to raise the price of a tag significantly to cover the shortfall. The haters might want to reexamine the stats of what those bad rich people provide including jobs. The top 1% pays 43% of the total income tax in the US. Top 10% pays 75%. The bottom 50% of people only pay 3%.

How many CO residents purchasing elk tags ($70.40 each) does it take to make up for one gov tag at $300,000? (or more).

Don't try to bring rationale to an emotion based decision.

That's how CNN and Fox make their livings.

Emotional responses and people unable to see or even acknowledge the other side of an argument are what's dividing us.

Or you could read this thread and see we have discussed a 1/8th of a percent sales tax towards fish and game. That would require no increase in license costs. You're using an emotional argument to whip people to your side. You don't have to be so scared of change.

You do realize that each of these sentences you've uttered is straight out of the marxist-progressive propaganda handbook, right?

Tax more...

...while arguing the taxes benefit your target group...

...while accusing your opponents of doing exactly what you're doing...

...while counter-accusing them of something in a way designed to get either an emotional shut-down, or even better, a highly-charged emotional response that will let you isolate them further.

Absolute textbook.

I don't even want to validate this with a response lol.

Nobody wants more taxes either.

I would argue the general public is neutral on a 1/8th % tax. I would also argue the general public would be appalled to learn rich people can buy once in a lifetime tags. Either we police ourselves as hunters or lose to antis when they realize what angle to attack from.

Also if your against a 1/8 % tax for conservation, you're truly just a horrible person and I hope you're not my fellow American.
