I want to put a new barrel on my older Browning A-Bolt 2 Stainless in 3006, does anybody know of a company that will make one, looking for good quality accurate hand lapped barrel for it, I would like 1" accuracy or better.
Thanks for any suggestions

I had a browning A-bolt 2 stainless stalker once that I wanted to rebarrel.

Turns out Browning A-Bolt 2 stainless barrels have a nasty habit of pulling the threads out of the action when they are removed.

I wound up selling the gun, as it was fine, just didn’t like the caliber.

Speak with local gunsmiths before buying a barrel for one.

Then buy a blank and have it installed & chambered.

Thanks for the reply, yes stainless will gauld, I used to have to losen a stainless bolt a little at a time even then 70% success rate. Either a new barrel or rifle I am hoping to get a quality custom barrel as the action is fine.

The basic answer to the question though.

All of the custom barrel makers make some quality products.

I like Mcgowen my self, I also have a carbonsix prefit on the way to try out.

They use Mcgowen blanks.

Sub 1” groups at 100 yards this day in age, that is no big feat at all.

Many smiths don't like to work on them because they're very thin in the action. They are odd for action wrenches to grab.

I won't try to pull a factory barrel without a relief cut on the old barrel....which is another step and still not guaranteed to not pull threads. Browning decided to use very fine pitches on the tennon so it won't tolerate any sticking before its over.

So better off buying something else, bummer elk season coming up, now to find a good shooting 3006 in stainless.

I like building off the Tikka, but to be honest, I really like the Bighorn Origin.

They just came out with the bead blasted actions. They use a standard savage prefit barrel, and a Remington 700 footprint. You can literally do everything in your garage.

Check out Northland Shooter Supply, he usually has the actions in stock.

I hope it is ok for me to mention them here, as I do not believe they are a sponsor.

But I recently put together a 28 Nosler with an action and barrel from him. He keeps tons of barrels in stock. Carries Criterion and Shilen.

Thanks for the replies, I really don't want to have to buy a new rifle, getting a replacement barrel job done is bad enough, already over budget for my elk hunt. Tikka is an option relatively cheap, Bighorn Origin really nice but once all components are put together out of my price range. Can't find a Vanguard in stainless 3006, Winchester might be an option I here good things about their new line, not sure about Savage or which of their line will perform well, and Browning X-bolt well if they are no better than what I am dealing with then I don't want their actions, not sure don't know much about them.

I contacted a gun smith dropped it off on the way to work. I shared what Wrench said about a relief cut, now I hope he can remove the barrel, once that is done I will get a replacement for it.

a quality gun Smith can replace the barrel just need to use a lot of heat as browning uses a thread locker on their barrels I have a x bolt H/C LR in 280 ai that is on its second bartlien barrel it can be done but finding a smith willing to do the work is an issue

I hope it comes off without any problems.

The Browning A-Bolt 2 is one of my favorite actions.

I would like to build a custom off of one someday.

Yes I hope it does too, will have to post the results. Checking for replacement barrels it would be nice to upgrade over factory but wait times may not allow, upcoming elk hunt this fall and I will need time to develop a load using 180gr accubonds.

THIS might be worth a read wrt re-barreling the Abolt. Took him 7 months to get a barrel from Pac-Nor...this fall hunting season might be tough for you on timing.

I've got an Abolt2 stainless in .270win I'll rebarrel someday. It was my first rifle and still one of my favorites. Its a sweet action.

Gunsmith was able to get the barrel off with no problems. I located a factory barrel, it is for a A Bolt2 3006 white gold medallion I am 95% sure that 22"stainless barrel is the same one as the A Bolt 2 stainless stalker model used?

It should work but it would be good to confirm thread pitch matches the barrel that just came off your gun.

Picked up a oem Browning barrel yesterday 2hr drive each way, after discussing the problem with them it looks like the previous owner might have had a squib load and shot another round following it. The barrel had a slightly larger ID diameter about 6" from the breach to about 5" before the muzzle. I didn't consider this until he mentioned it, I guess someone was trying to develope a subsonic load and the followup shot being under charged didn't blow the barrel apart just expanded it a couple thousandths. I ordered a live pilot finish reamer for the new barrel, hopefully it shoots like my other A-bolts I've had. Everything else on the rifle checks out, goes to show you that used rifles can be a headache.

New question, now that the cause of the issues I was having with the barrels extensive copper fouling was due to the barrel being over pressured via squib load obstructing barrel then another load fired thus expanding that area of the barrel, should the bolt head be replaced or is it so much stronger as to not worry about it?
